I just installed Catalyst 4.9 on my friends 9200. It is windows xp and when it booted up it froze. So I went in to safe mode and uninstalled it. When trying to install 4.7 though it says it has some INF error and the video card is not recognized and it recommends installing a basic vga driver. Whats wrong?

Driver Cleaner (http://majorgeeks.com/download3214.html) Use that and follow the directions in the readme file.

I've had this with certain Beta drivers (namely Beta 4.8) and even trying to reinstall previous, known good, driver versions has caused the same error to occur whehre once it did not. The honly solution i found (short of reformattign and startign from scratch) was to use Windows System Restore to return the machine to a state prior to the intallation of the new drivers which introduced the problem

I just westled with the same problem with a 9200 and the factory driver for XP that came with it. Xp set it up right and I tried to update it with the driver disk. I crashed the system. I fixed it like Jakk said. I actually had the same problem with a radeon 7000 also on two different MBs. If XP picks up the driver during a restore or repair install then leave well enough alone.

Its doubtfull that any 9200 based card will show any great benefits from the new 4.9 drivers anyway. These drivers have been designed mainly to increase the Doom 3 scored ATI cards get, and Doom3 simply isn't playable on a 9200 unless you turn off all the effects and shadows which will completely ruin the whole feel of the game.
