333 Bus CPU on a 266 bus Mobo?

I have 2 mobo sitting without a CPU. They are a 266 bus. Can I install an AMD 333 bus CPU, I'm looking at buying a xp2600 or xp2500, on a motherboard that has a 266 bus? Will it work? Or do I have to buy a 266 bus CPU?

I wouldn't do that. the 333 cpu would probably havea lower multiplier, so it ends up being at a slower overall clock rate than the 266 cpu. go to the motherboard manufacturer's website for a cpu compatibility list.

You can do the pin mod if you're willing to to give the CPU a higher multiplier...that is, if the CPU is unlocked internally. A lot of people are doing this on older motherboards as a way to stave off upgrading their platform.

Why not look at 266 MHz frequency mobile cpu's? Check newegg (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=property&DEPA=1) for prices.

Those work very well - they're much cheaper than Athlon MPs, and are the same thing too.

Or just limit yourself to an XP2400+ or lower, which all have 133 MHz bus, while they are still available. This end of the market is transitioning to Sempron as we speak, which is all 166-MHz.

Edit: No, I don't fall for the DDR "frequency doubling" marketing BS. 133 MHz DDR is not 266 MHz. Thank you very much.

I saw that newegg link was broken here is a list of the mobile xp chips they hae and all of these are 266.

You can also get the following CPU, which is 133MHz faster than the barton CPU but has 256KB less cache.
