Hi you guys, I need your help again.

I lost the "Volume Control" icon from the taskbar. I thought I knew how to get it back, but I have tried everything I can think of and it still won't come back. I went into add/remove programs, Multimedia, and put a checkmark in the volume control box, and clicked OK to install the volume icon.

Win95 tells me to put the Win95 CD-Rom into the drive and click next. When I do that, like so many times when I'm trying to install a Win95 feature, I get the message "cannot find file "so&so". This time it could not find the file "sndvol32.cnt." I even had a neighbor copy the sndvol32.cnt file from his computer onto a floppy for me, and I put it in the System folder. It still won't install the volume icon. It keeps asking for the Win95 CD, which doesn't work.

Been there and done that enough times. What am I doing wrong? I don't understand why I can't find files on the Win95 CD. Isn't that where everything comes from when we first install the Win95 operating system to start with?

This is driving me nuts ! ! !

I'm glad my wife locked up my gun.

Any help is very much appreciated.

Did you try reinstalling your Sound Card Drivers?

Plaster,

I tried "Add new Haedware" and win95 didn't see it. My sound card is on the motherboard. Isn't sndvol32.cnt a driver?

Try CONTROL PANEL - MULTIMEDIA, theres a small checkbox that reads "Show volume control on the task bar".

Make sure its checked. If it is checked then uncheck it, click Apply, then re-check it and click apply. Hope this helps.

Good luck

Zyplex,

I copied the sndvol32.exe file from my other computer (Win98) and put in the C:\Windows folder. The sndvol32.cnt file is already there. Still won't work. It still tells me to insert the Win95 CD and then tells me that Windows can't find file sndvol32.cnt. Isn't this getting kind of stupid? I thought computers were logical creatures.

Well, I'm glad that this diccussion fixed Bracal's icon problem at least.

I know there is a solution here somewhere, I just need to find it.

I think what you will need to do is go into the "add/remove programs" in your control panels and click on the "windows setup" tab....go to the multimedia section and unclick and then reclick the sound control box then click 'apply" then click OK windows will then reinstall the sound control application and then you should see the little yellow speaker down in your taskbar!

Enjoy

Mntsnow,

That is the rub. When I do what you suggested, I get the message that Windows cannot display the "volume control on the taskbar" because the volume control program has not been installed. When I try to install it, Windows cannot find the file sndvol32.cnt. That file is in the Windows folder, and so is sndvol32.exe. In looking at the details of why Windows can't install volume control, it mentions a "destination file C:\windows\sndvol32.exe=Win95_12.cab. Is there something missing or corrupt with the .cab files?

It seems like nothing is as easy as it should be.

Zyplex,

Putting a check mark in the ‘show vol. Control on taskbar' box doesn't work. Windows tells me that "Windows cannot display volume control on the Taskbar because the volume control program has not been installed. To install it, use Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel"; Which brings me back to my problem described in my original post. I can't get Win95 to install the program.

What am I missing here?

I suppose all you have to do is go to your souncards web page, download the latest files and then install them. If you find an exec. file it will fix everything up if there is no conflicts or no mechanical prob. If it is a self extracting file then probably you are going to find some inf files. Try to add new hardware without windows searching for it. Then locate the directory.

I've had similar problems with Windows finding files on the CD.
I don't know which version of 95 you are using, but the original release has the files SNDVOL32.EXE and SNDVOL32.CNT in Cab_08.
Getting Windows to actualy look there may be a problem.
Try typing the exact path D:\WIN95\CAB_08, assuming your CD is drive D:.
Incidently, the .exe file should be in C:\Windows, the .CNT file should be in C:\Windows\Help.
Have you examined the WIN95 CD for scratches & tried cleaning it?
Again, these are for WIN95A!
Hope I helped!

Maxval is correct, "the .CNT file should be in C:\Windows\Help". Double check that just in case. Also try downloading REGCLEAN from Microsoft.com, install and run it to clean any possible registry errors that might be contributing to your problems.

Zyplex,

I do have the .cnt file in the C:\windows\help file. After trying the Add/Remove program to reinstall the Volum control many times, it decided to work. I have the volume control back now, but no check marks in the MultiMedia box nor anything under it. The CD Player quit autostarting and cannot open MIDI files and some other things. I think it is all related. I'll keep looking for the solution.

I did download REGCLEAN the other day, but haven't installed it yet. I'm going to that tonight.

I appreciate your help.

Doug,

Make sure you don't have any legacy drivers installed and loaded from the config.sys or autoexec.bat. This would explain why you have the volume control but the check box is greyed out on multimedia properties.
