go to winfiles.com and onto the drivers section for multimedia\soundcards. From there go to HP's site and see what drivers are there. You might have to download a few before you get the correct one but you will eventually.

Go to windrivers.com. They have a picture of the chips on their web site for soundcards. Match with your sound card (you will have to open up your computer to see the sound card). From there, you will be able to get the right driver for the right card.

If all else fails, pull the card, and search by the FCC # They give the manufacturer.

If it's an HP you probably got a recovery disk with the computer. They put all of the drivers for their parts on the disk. Have you tried installing the drivers from the apps recovery disk (usually disk 2)? If not, simply put the CD in and let it autostart and tell it to install the necessary drivers for the sound card.

My experience with HP's is that you can go into their support section and support your exact model and series of machine (If the front label doesn't list a series they put a sticker on the side that does), and from there you can download whatever driver you want for your machine.
This is a stupid question, but this happened to me a couple of times with Win98. Have you, by chance, checked the volume control? It's weird, but a couple of times, Win98 either muted or turned the volume all the way down on my system. You said that windows wasn't detecting it. Maybe it's already installed, and just not working right? Have you gone through device manager and checked for conflicts yet?
The only generic HP sound cards I've seen are nade by Aztech and need the AZTAUD drivers. Win98 picks them up fine, unless there is a resource conflict (I/O or IRQ)
Look at the sound card cpu chip and tell us what it says, it mught be something else.
About the volume control, is it there? If you have a volume control showing up then the drivers are in fact loaded.
well?
