I have the Intel 440BX (82443BX and 82371EB).
Abit BX6 updated. This board supports UDMA/33 IDE protocol.

Device Mgr shows:
Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Master IDE Controller
Primary/Secondary IDE's (dual fifo)

My WD 13G ATA/66 is showing terrible benchmarks. I understand that I can only utilize UDMA/33 and the UDMA/66 is backward compatible. However, my hdd in post is UDMA mode 2.

From my understanding reading through some of Intel's .pdf files, the BMIDE updates are not supposed to be used with Win98 and the BX chipset - Win98 supplies the drivers for this.

Also, the board's CD refuses to install PIIX controllers/drivers as they are for Win95, OSR/2 and NT4.

I have no DMA box to enable.

How do I get my hdd to run in UDMA/33? Do I need the Promise card?

Any help here is appreciated!

You can go to the website of the hard drive manufacturer and download the software that disables UDMA66 and enables UDMA33 modes.

I hope you haven't loaded any NT/95 UDMA drivers, because the only way to fix that is to reinstall Windows.

I'll check the site tomorrow night and see what software there is to download.

I did a cursory check, the only thing I looked at were system req'mts. It sounded like I do need the controller, but I will further study the site tomorrow night.

Thanks for the reply BBA http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Thanks Gentle Giant.

I have been to the WD site several times and unless I am completely out of the ballpark (as opposed to just off base), what I am getting is that I need a controller.

I should just get stock in Fry's.
