I have an 800 Athlon with a 60GB 7200RPM HD running Win XP with SP2. I’m an internet junkie and I think I need a new computer.

If I buy a new computer that comes with no operating system, can I install my present HD and “adopt” the OS? Would I be better off to install a new Win XP OS and copy my present files etc or should I just add my present HD as a slave? Would I need to remove the OS from my present HD and how would I do that?

Do you have the original XP disk or did it come pre-installed? ( I doubt it did but have to ask)

Sounds like you might have done an upgrade or a clean install, which?

Yes, it is possible to put the HD in the new one but a few more details before a better explanation.

The XP was an upgrade from W98

it's better to do a clean install. if you install xp on the new system you will have to renew the activation. since it would be a completely different system, you may need to call microsoft to get the new activation.

moving hdds with xp is not very clean. you'll probably end up with a bluescreen. use the old drive as a slave in your new system and pull the data off of it.
