I'm working on a gateway computer: 486dx-50v. The user formated the harddrives which it only has 2- 405mbs each. The computer worked fine except it had 3.1 on it and he wanted win95. When I first turned the computer on it wouldn't read the floppy drive and was giving me an invalid boot... whatever. Now after reseating all cards it boots to the floppy driver.

It has a CDROM which worked great before the format. I reinstalled all dos drivers, the ones that came with the computer, (IE.: CDrom, sound card, video) useing my win95 emergency boot disk.
Now here's my problem. The drivers see the sound card but not the cdrom which is plugged into the sound card. Now it worked with this config with 3.1 but why not now, could it be the version of DOS I'm using. I don't have a newer dos except for the dos that came with the PC which I really didn't want to install with win95.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

You need to go to the Gateway site and get the CD-ROM drivers for the sound card from them. You could try plugging the CD into the standard IDE, but depending on age, it may not work.
YOu could also try manually installing the CD if you know it's properties from the sound card interface.

All CDROM drivers even the generic ones didn't work. The cable for the CDROM is smaller than a normal IDE cable.

The drive is a 2x. They are not interested in upgradeing this system (hardware wise) at this point in time.

You must get the drivers specifically for those cd players. They are NOT ide devices so a generic cd-rom driver install won't work. Also, the initialization string for the sound card must include a line to make the cd-rom interface bus active. You've got to download those installation (for sound card AND cd-rom) files or you'll be tearing your hair out.

I know what your saying madmax i do this for a living but the drivers that came with the pc don't seem to work. Everything is original in the gateway pc. I don't understand why the drivers just won't work now.
