Hi,
I would greatly appreciate help with this strange problem. I have the following system:
333 Mhz Celeron
64 Megs Memory
On Board AGP Video 8 Meg
On Board Sound
40X ATAPI CD-Rom
Win 98, clean install
If I try to play an audio CD, the CD player will play the CD for 5-10 seconds, then shut down, or restart the CD. I have updated the drivers for the sound card as well.

Any insight to this perplexing problem would be appreciated.

Well, lets just start with the obvious, have you checked to make sure the power connector from PS to CD-ROM is plugged in good and tight? Check your device manager. Have you checked the cdroms website for updated drivers?

I've never heard of this problem. Did you build this system yourself?
Anyone else like to comment?

I replaced the original 24X CD-Rom with the 40X from another system. I can install and read from data cds...
I have checked for drivers, and I have found none on the manufacturers site. The drive is UDMA capable, if this helps.

Disable DMA in windows.

Okay, where do I disable it? I do not have a DMA option on the disk drive controller tab or on the CD-Rom tab in device manager.

If there isn't even an option to enable or disable DMA in the settings stuff, it's probably already disabled. What motherboard do you have? It might have disabled DMA in the BIOS. Though I doubt that is what is causing the trouble...

This sounds like this problem. I played this trick on my girlfriend, I turned the intro setting on for the CD-player and it would only play the first 5-10 seconds of the audio CD.

By the way if it was a DMA problem the cdrom may not work at all.
