My bro justmoved to the UK and his modem can't pick up a dial tone anymore.
Has anyone heard of that kind of problem before ? I thought that modems were pretty much universal.
Maybe he's got a digital line, but I doubt it !

I seem to remember our dial tone sounds different to your's.
There is an AT command to stop the modem waiting for a dial tone, get him to look it up and change his modem initialisation string. I have had to use this feature when dialing through internal exchanges that don't give a standard dial tone (e.g. pulsed dial-tone to indicate re-direct has been enabled).

He'll probably have to get in touch with his modem mfg, or at least get the UK version of the driver for it. The phone system uses different dial tones and voltages. Without the right driver it just won't work.
