Software being older than the drive comes into play as well I think. Not an answer but a thought jogger. Sterling_Aug 09-15-2004, 10:15 PM I just upgraded to an NEC 16X dual layer DVD burner. Results of burner comparison using "no name" 4X DVD media: Sony 8X single layer burner 97% success at 1X 50% success at 2X 0% success at 4X NEC 16X dual layer burner: 100% success at 1X 100% success at 2X 1000% success at 4X So far, the NEC burner seems to be making an excellent improvement on my burning results. Tony2005 09-16-2004, 05:24 AM yeah the media is rated 4X, its made by Datawrite, and im currently using nero 6.0.0.11. im not sure how old the drive is i was given it for free but it cant be new at only 4X and its not even dual layered :( Sterling_Aug 09-16-2004, 06:36 AM Update to the latest version of Nero. Here is a page of new DVD burners: http://www.newegg.com/app/manufact.asp?catalog=5&DEPA=0 Tony2005 09-16-2004, 06:09 PM im building a new a machine soon so ill get a new dvd burner then. do these new DVD burners support HD-burn? Johnny Fist 09-16-2004, 07:57 PM I have that exact same drive and had that exact same problem. It turned out to be the media, despite it being rated at 4X. As it turns out, that particular burner is a bit fussy with blank media. I'be been using TDK and Memorex since I first encountered this problem and haven't had a problem yet. They're both name brand and can generally be found on sale at CompUSA or Best Buy at an affordable price. Why does this sound like a commercial? Sterling_Aug 09-16-2004, 08:47 PM I bought 500 blank "no name" DVD -Rs on sale for less than $0.35 each (with shipping). I can now burn them at 4X with the new NEC burner. Magua 09-16-2004, 08:57 PM TDK or Memorex mean nothing. They continually switch manufactuers. I personally like Ritek (which sometimes can be what the 'name brands' are) other brands like CMC have a bad history. Expensive media does not necessarily mean good media, and the reverse is true for cheap media. Memorex, TDK, Fugifilm, etc. no not manufacture their own discs. Johnny Fist 09-17-2004, 05:10 AM In this case TDK and Memorex mean everything as I can verify they will burn at 4X on his particular burner. Tony2005 09-17-2004, 06:35 AM in the end in not writing alot of DVDs just the odd back-up now and then so i dont mind wating twice as long Magua 09-17-2004, 09:07 PM In this case TDK and Memorex mean everything as I can verify they will burn at 4X on his particular burner. No. One batch of memorex is not necessarily like the next. You can buy Memorex discs from best buy every week that are identical, then one time they are different. From what Ive seen I think most memorex discs are Ritek or CMC. Ritek is usually pretty reliable, I don't trust CMC. There is *no* such thing as a "memorex disc." There are Ritek dics stamped memorex, or CMC discs stamped memorex, etc. Memorex, TDK, etc. do NOT make their own discs and just because one batch worked on your burner by no means indicates that Memorex/TDK will work universally on that burner. Disc brand means *nothing* Johnny Fist 09-18-2004, 05:58 AM I understand that, but Memorex and TDK discs have given me no problems with this burner. Maybe we should say Memorex, TDK, Ritek, and CMC. How's that? Magua 09-19-2004, 12:55 PM Thats fine, but Memorex or TDK still aren't guarenteed to work in his burner, or even guarenteed to work in your burner next time. Probably will...and they are getting better. CD's used to be similar but production has gotten so cheap they are all decent quality now. SysOpt.com
