I have the following:
AMD 64 3200+
1024mb RAM
Radeon 9800 PRO 128mb
I am wondering, will it be able to handle half life 2 at high settings?
I played the demo of Far Cry on this new PC with all Very High settings and it ran very smoothly. (BTW great game)
I know Far Cry demands alot from a PC, and HL2 can't demand much more, can it?:(
Thanks;)

It will definately run HL2 with decently high settings. I highly doubt it will run HL2 with everything maxxed (it wouldn't run Doom3 maxxed either).

Cards don't exist yet that should be able to run Doom3 at max settings. :t
Atleast according to Carmack and Friends

I ran doom 3 on a 6800 non-ultra non-gt, 1280x1024 at ultra quality...60fps in light action, 30-40 in heavy action...performed very well for the card IMO.

I know nothing plays doom3 with absolutly maxed settings. His rig will definatly play HL2 without a problem at mid settings, possibly some high, but almost definately not maxxed.

I agree, I just wanted to add my random thought :) But that computer will definately be a nice hl2 machine, and an awesome cs:source machine.

Thats fantastic. I wasn't planning on buying Doom 3 anyway, I'm afraid I never really got to play any of the previous versions (I had a deprived childhood, I know:D ) I was a more Duke Nukem fan!
Anyway, if I was to upgrade in the future, what would be the first thing to get. I presume a new graphics card, but what type?
Cheers;)

For HL2, the x800 series...like the x800 pro of the x800 xt

Assuming the Ram is PC3200 or better the next upgrade would probably be the video card. However, I would definately stick with the 9800pro for this new wave of games, than maybe upgrade after that. Getting the next step up now is probably not the best investment.

1024x768 with high AF and moderate AA should be more than do-able on that system.
