I know someone that wants to set up a dedicated server for bf1942 demo(wake island) on linux. But the server files are .exe and he said something about exe not being compatitable with linux....is there a way to make a dedicated bf1942 server on linux?
I got the demo files here btw

I don't think its against the TOS to post demo sites.:D

I can't run the server manager from that site. When I try to run,it says something about couldn't find the 1942 server executable file. I am running a test on the demo version so theres no bf1942_w32ded I think. What should I do?
If I can't run it,is there any way I can run a gaming server on a linux machine for testing purposes? Just for testing the bandwidth, thats all.:t

Get the dedicated server for linux at FileShack (http://www.fileshack.com/file.x?fid=4499) or your source of choice. The .run file will install the necessary files in the directory structure that BF1942 sets itself up in.
Hope this helps.

no prob, this is what I did. I started a dedicated server for the demo version 1.0 and then I tried Battlefield 1942 Server Manager from the site u posted, windows version btw. it says something about no bf1942_w32ded so I am thinking its for the retail version.
Is there one for the demo version or is there any other game I can use to test the bandwidth for how many players I can host on the server?

hmmm...I tried and it said couldn't detect a validbf1942 mod folder, when I tried to run the server manager.
When I try to run the BF1942_w32ded.exe, it says BFCPRT.dll was not found. I am guessing its because thats for the demo version. Maybe I can't run bf1942 server after all....
Is there any other game that I can easily run a server on? Btw,I ain't the one running it,I am just helping someone check on running a server on linux, hes kinda new to this stuff,I know how to run it on windows but I know almost nothing about linux.

You could try the Half-Life Dedicated Server from FileFront or FileShack. All that is required to get it running is a Steam account (free). And you could always buy a Half-Life retail game for about $15 these days to test out the server. Be advised, Linux/Unix knowledge, along with whatever you can pick up from the Steam forums, are very helpful.

I thought, that the file extension doesnt matter in linux. in the university i programmed things in fortran and linux (command line only) and i named the executeable files .exe, but they still ran.
maybe its because the files you are use are for windows.

I am not sure but he told me that exe files can't run on linux,I never used linux before so I kinda know nothing about linux and how it works. I will check again, thanks :)
I will post back when I get more info.

It's not that Linux can't handle EXE (executable) files - executable files are what make the world go round. Rather, the demo you've linked to was compiled as an executable for a Windows platform. See if you can find the same file that was compiled as an executable for Linux.
