I tried to look at file associations but my PC couldn't show them.

I had a look in the registry (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes) and instead of the usual list of file extensions, it appears to have been encrypted ie. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.

Everything else seems to be working fine.

I scan for viruses, trojans, spyware etc regularly

My computer has an Athlon700 chip, 450mb ram running win2000 pro.

Anyone got any ideas?

looks like the registry is corrupt.

try a repair install of 2k pro.
