I am not able to recognize the d drive(cd) in dos. I am running win98 and the d drive is recognized with the startup disk. I used the a:sys c: command and it did not help.
The autoexec.bat has the mscdex.exe file in it and the config.sys has the device="statement" in it ,but they are missing alot of what is in the startup disk's autoexec.bat and config.sys.
So my question is this. Can I copy what is in the startup files to the c: and how would I do that if it would work?

Hmm, you should be able just to open your autoexec.bat and config.sys off your boot disk, then copy the lines that load MSCDEX.EXE from your autoexec.bat on A:\ to your autoexecbat on C:\ . Do the same for the lines the load the device in your config.sys. Do this in Windows, then reboot.

You must also xfer the *.sys files from the system disk onto the root dir of c:
Without these files present, the config.sys will error out trying to find the cd rom device files.
achter~Can you get to the cd from within W98?
Troubleshoot this way:
Boot to "Command Prompt Only"
Try to access the cd drive.
If you can't, look (use "type" or "edit")at the autoexec.bat file.
If it has a "rem" to the left of the mscdex line, run that command line from your prompt starting from c:\windows\command\mscdex....
Leave out the remark (rem).
That will either start your cd or report an error. Post back the error and I'll go from there.
Don't copy anything from the startup disk yet, those system files are huge and you'll end up will parameters you don't want or need in your system.

I did what you asked madmax and got this:
Device driver not found: 'mscd000'
Novalid cdrom device drivers selected.
Yes I can use cd in win98.
The other weird thing is that I have built several systems for family. They all have this same problem. They all have different cd drives and drivers. I am starting with a new HD and Fdisk then formating, then starting with the win98 startup disk w/cdrom support. Is that not the way to start a new system.

Hi,
To be able to use the CDrom from floppy via the startup disk, you must first ensure that both the CDROM driver and the MSCDEX file is on your floppy. For the sake of simplicity, put it in the root directory of A:\.
Include the following statement in the config.sys of the startup disk (ie. A:\):
DEVICE=A:\<cdRom driver>.SYS /D:MSCD001
Include the following statement in the autoexec.bat of the startup disk (ie. A:\):
A:\MSCDEX /D:MSCD001
Obviously, if you want other TSR's loaded on your startup, then make sure to copy it on the floppy and type the correct path in either the autoexec.bat and config.sys
Hope this helps.

Rickee actually the cd works w/ startup disk but not in dos but it does work in win98. I never would have know if I hadn't tried to run a dos game and could not get the prompt.

Find the file called dosstart.bat on your hd. Compare the lines relating to your CD-ROM from there to your Autoexec.bat
They should be the same.

Who makes your CD-ROM? Most CD-ROM manufactuers have drivers, either that are packaged witht the drive, or can be downloaded from thier website. These drivers usually contain an install program that will put all of the necessary lines in config.sys and Autoexec.bat.

Hi Achter,
Sorry for the misread. There are several ways to go into Dos Mode, the easiest being "Restart the computer in Dos mode". If you are going into this mode, you must ensure that the CDRom driver is specified the config.sys.
Therefore, find out that your CDrom device driver is in a directory you are sure of and add the line:
DEVICE=c:\<correct path>\<cdRom driver>.SYS /D:MSCD001
Then, as reboot suggested, put the following in dosstart.bat, located in the Windows directory:
C:\<correct path>\MSCDEX /D:MSCD001
When I need to be complete DOS mode, I create DOS sessions where you can be in DOS mode indefinately (ie. after powerdown/poweron). If you are interested, I'll post it (as this reply is getting bigger and bigger).

Thanks for the input. I have loaded the drivers several times. It does work in win98.
I have the files in config.sys you guys refered to. I don't know about dosstart.bat, but I have the mscdex.exe line in autoexec.bat.

Thank You all Problem solved. I loaded the oakcdrom driver from the startup disk to the c drive and copied the appropriate lines for it to the config.sys and autoexec.bat.
Wonderful, thankyou!
