I am building a new system and already own this scanner.HP wants $25 for tech support(no way). Anyway, I am going to use a ASUS P2BS with u2wide scsi. Therefore, the HP scsi card will be gone. The scanner will plug directly into the motherboard. I am wondering if the drivers will load off the win98 cd( hp claims they will) and the scanner will work without any other instuction that it is not using the HP expansion card. What do you guys think????

The driver for the SCSi should load ok and should see the scanner. However, depending upon the application you plan to use, I am almost sure you will still need to run setup HP software to utilize the scanner. Download the latest version of HP scan software from HP. Most of this software is more in the nature of an application, rather than a driver. Even if you scan from other applications, most will utilize what as know as "TWAIN" support which as I understand it is a method of linking scanners to applications. TWAIN support for your scanner will be installed when you install the HP scanner software. I have several HP scanners running of non HP SCSI cards and the software had no trouble seeing the scanner attached to a non HP card and properly configuring. A note of caution, you will probably need a new cable to attach your scanner to your new computer and make sure your provide for proper termination on the scanner. "ONE" device cards that come with scanners often don't need termination. Also, you may have to set the speed that your new scsi card tries to link up to scanner at a very low speed to keep from slowing down the speed at which the card link up to any internal devices you install. This will not reduce scanning speed since your HP scanner has a relatively old scsi interface.

Thank You TOMS111. Your reply was much needed. Did you know that HP charges for the software you are refering to deskscan 2.8 for win98. Go figure.

I am almost positive that the w95 version (ver. 2.1a), available free at: http://www.hp.com/cposupport/swindexes/sj4ppc_swen.html
will work without any problems.
