Hi all,
Last nite installed a little program called EASY MTU. to try to improve internet connection.(at least, I think that's what it claims to do)
My 56k modem used to always connect at, oh somewhere between 40k & 50k bps, according to the little icon in task tray. time of day, etc.
So, I save the mtu recommended settings to registry....connect this morning, and little icon says i am connected at 115200 bps.
Please, what does this mean?
Akimboooooo ... the newbie!
still haven't tried upgrading the 486, you may remember my earlier post, "NEWBIE HARD DRIVE QUESTIONS:" but appreciate all responses....will update on that project later.
BTW, this system is a amd k6-2 (333) with 32 MB of Sdram Asus PSA-B Mainboard

What you're seeing is the Computor port to modem speed.
Sounds impressive though. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
Their is a way to change it back to showing modem speed but i havn,t had to do it in ages so im not sure how.

akimbo, my experience is that the connected reading 115200bps is dependent on the setting you have on the modem in the control panel. If you change it to 56600 that reading will change back to 56600bps. I have been told that it makes the modem faster to set it at a higher setting, but you could not prove it by me.

Thanks for replies
Modem connection does seem faster, actually, slightly hyper, and I am getting a lot of disconnects, "connection reset by peer", at this setting. Will set the speed down a bit
Any experience with these ready made MTU programs out there????
As Ricky Ricardo said to Lucy ..."this is ridiculuuus"
Goin to work
see you later

The registry entries changed by these type of programs can be done yourself without them. RegEdit has the necessary info. http://www.regedit.com/Performance/Network_and_Internet/
This site is also infomative. http://808hi.com/56k/ The trouble shooting section and the the site in general is good.

I'm not sure but I thought the 115,200 refers to the speed between the modem and the processor. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

The 115,200 is the speed you have set for your COM port.
I've found that when the modem Mfg. drivers are not installed and WIN generic drivers are used, then the COM port speed shows up instead of the actual connection speed.

Susan, I have the MFG Driver installed on this system...always did. Under the modem settings in hardware profiles, however, max speed indeed was set at 115200 bps.
I just found it odd , that it never connected at this speed, or showed these values until I installed the EASY MTU program....Anyway, I reduced max speed and I am back down to normal range now....but, I don't know if that is a good thing..
Thanks to all,
Bleeding Edge...great modem sites..Thanks

You should try a change in the modem string - I have forgotten but I believe if you add a "W2" in the string it will report the actual connection string =- check with socalgal.
Socalgal - do you remember that "W?" or whatever and where to put it in the modem initialization string so that it reports back the true connection speed?

CMonster ~I remember, but I don't remember the number that came after it and I don't remember where in the string!! darn it http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

In the advances modem settings ini string add AT&F http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif and 115,200 will be dislayed. Bleeding Edge's info is definitive.
