ISA runs on 8 bit and PCI runs on 16 bit. cant really tell the difference with modems. ill buy that ISA modem from you for 35 bucks. i need a new one soon. my v.90 motorola has no ****ting power. if u need the ISA slot get PCI cuz it doesnt make much difference.

Most ISA modems are "hard" modems, meaning they are jumper-configured thus usable under any OS including DOS.
PCI Modems are usually, but not always, "soft" modems usable only under Windows, thus called Winmodems. The OS does the IRQ and port assignments rather than setting jumpers.
Which is best depends on your usage, I've found ISA better, but recently set up a PCI cheapie for a friend who uses only W95 & seldom makes changes, it works well for him.

If they are both hard modems, go for the PCI, cuz the future of the ISA is looking dim..with Camino and all to have NO ISA slots.

Scary...
Id rather get a hard ISA modem than a soft PCI modem tho

Hello There,

I wanna know which of the 2 is better, as I have a USR 56k (one of the older ones that I flashed from x2 to v90 isa) and I have a choice of getting a never one (usr) but pci and v90. The reason I wanted a PCI is because on my MB i have only one isa slot available and its taken by my usr. So getting a Pci, I would free up a slot for future cards.....
One tech told me that isa is better than Pci because isa runs at 5 volts and pci runs at 3 volts or something like that. And more voltage would provide better performance.

Any pointers?

Go for a USB and save a slot.

Besides external modems have the advantage of diaognosing connection problems alot easier.

I'm with IRED, go external (serial or USB) save yourself some headaches.

just go with an old reliable, V.90 external serial...

my internal usr pci x2/v.90 modem is great... and guess what guys... uswest DID change their setup...me and my father cant use our old 56k modems anymore.... we had to spend 210$+ to get modems that worked!
just because of uswest!!
but anyways pci is great...sometimes...and external is the real way to go...
