I recently bought a new HDD and installed Win98, and, along with it IE4. At first, it worked fine, but after a couple of days, browsing speed began to chug. I looked in the settings, and IE had the amount of drive space for temp internet files set to 0, and you couldn't change or or specify a new folder.

Other (seemingly) related problems include not being able to download files from links; IE forcing any images you try to save to be .bmps (with the filename "untitled"); and this weird one...the borders around buttons are made of thin slices of images on the page currently being viewed! For example, the "Search" button on a search engine would have a border made of portions of the ad banner's graphics. Kooky.

Upgraded to IE5, then reinstalled Win98, but the problem persists...any takers on this one?

Here's a couple of things to try:

First, if you're overclocking, try setting your processor back to default and trying then.

Second, try updating your display drivers. It could be a messed up driver.

Ryan:

No o'clocking going on here (not that it dindn't cross my mind http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

I'll try to update the driver when I get home - any ideas how/why that would cause the problem with specifying the temp file folder/size? Thanks for the help!

I'm not sure if it will help the temp file folder, but it might fix the problems with the border. Another question, where are you getting IE5 from??? Microsoft?

I got IE5 straight off the Microsoft site.

I seemed to have fixed most of the problems mentioned, though, by booting to DOS and DELTREEing c:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files and c:\Windows\History. Oddly enough, I think this remedied the button border problem too, but I was too excited at being able to actually download files with a dialup that I forgot to notice!

Thanks for the help.
