hi all

well my site is working. from a prfesional point of veiw I know its pretty lame, but its for family and freinds so thats ok.

however, now that I have had a little success with the basics I would like to spruce it up a bit.

what I need is any links ya,all may have to some simple web sites. personel preferably, I say this because I look at the code for your popular sites and its way beyond my abilities.

I am also sorta thinkin about layout too, when I started this all I wanted to do was get a pic or two and a bit of text up to hyper space, just cause I had all that was required technicaly to do it, just not the know how to do it.

now that i got a couple of pics and things, I am finding myself wanting to exspand, get a little more focused, learn a few more tricks as it were?

anyway, thanks for any input.

ward.

O ya, this is the site if you feel inclined to look.

hey. decent site for a first go.

one thing i'd say is maybe grouping all the
diagnostic stuff together would make
it a little tidier but can't get too technical
with the code as i'm not a programmer.

ward, what is it you actually would like help with?
looked at site...nice site so far, just needs a bit of sprucing up.
can give you links but to what? and if u have links to Anti virus programs, they should be under a link called "links" or "Techi Stuff" ect and all grouped together as megaspazz said. What makes a tidy site is organisation and catorgories.
May i suggest an Intro page first.....says who u guys are and what you do ect with a button or link for "gallery" or "last creations" or "photos"
i can provide you with links to sites that you can download menus, buttons ect and you simply add these as an image and provide a link from them
All in all nice going for first site...keep up the good work :t

Some tips to make it "better":
* The colours bleed into one another and make it very difficult to read - the links especially.
* Don't resize images in HTML if they are considerably larger anyway - for instance don't put a 1600*1200 image taken from your HP Photosmart 315 on the 11/04/2003 straight onto the site... it's a nightmare to download them all. Much better to resize the image to the size you wish to display as this not only speeds up downloading for the user, but gives you more space and lowers the bandwidth you are using. Use something like MS Paint, Irfanview (free & very easy) to resize.
* Why not seperate your pages up so that you have a "links" page, "closet creations"...

hey thank you all for the input.

Hola Hoop, this is the problem, I dont realy know what I want help with because i know "0" about web desing, I know only what you see in my sites code as far as writing code goes, I dont know what buttons are or do... so what I was hoping for was some links to some realy realy simple sites so I could look at their layout and study their code so I could come up with some sort of an idea for mine.

Doc evi1, I like the opening page idea, and I agree on the color thing. I also like the linking idea between computery stuff and the wood working stuff. but alas, as I say I dont have code know how to pull it off.

as far as image sizing, I am using paint shop pro. but I guess I dont know how to use it properly. I will work on that, the pics I have on the site dont do justice to the peices I am showing. they are sorta skewed and blury. but if I just put them up in original size, like you say they are twice as big as the screen displays. I supose this is also why it would be better displaying pics in a seperate folder(directory?)

if any of you know of a site that exsplains what all the characters < > " ---> etc.. do, that would be realy cool. I guess generaly I just need guidence. I kinda see the logic in the <head> <body> opening and closing things in plain html, but once the code starts getting into css or java, I am truely dazed and confused.

anyway I will keep plugin away at things. I am prety sure fancyf was trying to exsplain how pics and thing were stored in a diferant directory and accessed. I will do some back reading and see if things make more sence now that I have had a little success with things.

thanks again for your patience and support.

ward.

Hi wardD,

Glad to see your site is up and running. In addition to the above pointers, here are some design suggestions.

First, ask yourself what the real purpose of the site is. This will help you arrange stuff. Generally speaking, your "index" page is an introduction page that has some info as well as links to other parts of your site. If your site's purpose is to display your wordworking items, then your "index" page might have a nice little intro ("Hi, welcome to Closet Creations! Blah Blah Blah!"). Then, since you really want your visitors to see your products, you'd probably want a good picture (not a huge one) of one of your best pieces ever, with a little text that says "See more pictures in the Gallery!" (and the word "Gallery" would be a link to a different page that contains pictures and descritions of your various items).

Based on your content, I'd say start out with three different web pages - your "index" page, a "gallery" page, and a "links" page. You can put them all in the same folder if you want. In that case, a link from your main page to the gallery might look like:
<p>See more pictures of our fantastic items in the <a href="gallery.htm">Gallery</a>!</p>

My #1 Website Pet Peeve: When a site says "click here to view the Gallery!" or "click here to do whatever". Don't ever say "click here". It's moronic. If I ever catch you doing it, wardD, I will never speak to you again. Your links should be part of your normal text.

Anyway, I'm off on a tangent. I had a few links for you. HTMLGoodies (http://www.htmlgoodies.com/primers/basics.html) has a really super-basic HTML tutorial. A chimp could read this and be building a web page in a few days. My mother-in-law might even be able to do it.

And speaking of chimps, I will direct you to Webmonkey - Site Building (http://webmonkey.wired.com/webmonkey/design/site_building/index.html) for some general site building tips and tricks. Be sure to check out the Site Organization section (though most of the other stuff is useful too).

Anyway, we'll keep looking around for some nice simple sites. They're hard to find now-a-days, because most everyone is into (unfortunately) 2-minute animated intros, flashy menus, and generally confusing sites. Just remember this: Make your site easy to navigate, and keep it clean and simple. Keep away from glaring colors, weird fonts, etc. And never, ever, ever use "click this."

scarybinary, nice to here from you.

I am thinkin along the same line as you. the opening page, then link off to wood working items or computer stuff.
I was playing with paint shop pro( well watching the tutorial) and saw some cool things to do like the layered colauge(or how ever you spell it). definatley have lots to play with.

I use webmonkey alot, I will check out html goodies, it certainly has a catchy hame.

so I am not sure how you go about having three differant pages, which is why i only have "a" page that scrols on and on.

I finaly got every thing off my desk top and into the my website folder in the c:\ directory.

so if I were to make a folder in the my website folder and call it galery, then take my pics and put them in their. to access them or make them availiable on the web(my site) how would you write the code, <a href="<img src="galery/whatever.jpg>galery</a>

as mentioned above I will do some back reading and see if things make more sence.

chat soon, ward.

You made one page right? Just start out like you did with that one, except put different stuff in it. :D

All pages will have the basic form of:<html>
<head>
<title>Title of the Page</title>
</head>

<body>
<p>Main stuff goes here.</p>
</body>
</html>
So, make a second page, and call it "links.htm" (you could even copy that sample above, for a starting point). Put it in the same folder as your "index.htm" file. Now, if you add this next line of code to your current "index.htm" page, it will make a link to your "links.htm" page.<a href="links.htm">Links</a>
Now when you click on that link on your "index" page, it will open your new "links" page in the browser.

Then, cut all the links out of your current index page and paste them into your "links.htm" file.
