hmmmmmmm.......so is this paving the way for even higher clock speeds; i mean they will get impressive performance from higher clock speeds but will the heat not be a problem with half a billion transistors. i suppose if they apply this technology to a 64 bit CPU if or when they decide to get their finger out and make one then the performance would be out of this world! but by 2021 will there not be 128 bit CPUs lol.
come on intel jump on the AMD bandwagon and stop being stupid, and maybe i will start supporting you again.
I like how the article makes it seem like Intel is paving the way to multiple cores
"By packing yet more transistors onto a single chip, Intel is paving the way for future multi-core processors"
even though AMD is already ahead of them in this area.

Agreed Cyan....
If only the average dumb consumer would understand. Yes, the average consumer is dumb!

Is it not the case that, the smaller the transistors the less power is wasted and heat is less of a problem? Although with a smaller surface area it would be more difficult to cool...

I dont really beleive thier claim that smaller transistos mena s less power becuase the 90 nm Prescotts are boiling while the 130nm Northwood tend to run cooler.

What seems like good news is the maintained gate oxide thickness, which means at least that 65nm chips will run as hot and not hotter than 90nm chips, because they'll have the same leakage in that one respect. Other innovations may lead them to actually have the same amount of power consumption at high speeds as 130nm chips and lower.

and i just personally h8 cheese, anyway, if intel do say they will reach the limit with 16nm, what wil they move on to afterwards?, i've heard alsorts of ideas

If Intel would go for other things beside clock speed....

oh who knows. but im sure that they will find away to compress the chips even more. oh well, heres to hoping that AMD does it and cheaper;)
