I've had Sony CDU928E CD-R for over a year, have had no problems since learning how. Sounds like you're mosty on the right track, turn off everything possible, fresh reboot, etc.
Are you using CD Copier Deluxe or Easy CD Creator? Both are part of same package. If you haven't ran the system tests in EZ-CD, do so. Will establish copy speeds & program will work better. Since you have enogh HD space, when using CD copier, choose "copy source disk to the hard drive first" option under advanced tab. With EZ-CD, under tools menu, choose options and uncheck "use windows temp directory", then direct it to an empty directory (folder) on HD. Immediately before starting the copy, run "verify layout" under file menu. Always choose "test and copy" with either program, takes longer, works better. Lastly, once you've started copy process, leave it alone. By that I mean totally, no multitasking, no gaming, don't even mess with the mouse! Good time for dinner, or whatever. Just don't interrupt it in any way once it's started.

Good luck!

As you tweak with this, always leave things set to "Test and Copy". You should get your failures on the test run instead of toasting media. I say should, because it could pass the test then fail on the write. It almost sounds to me as though this could be a SCSI termination problem. Forgive my laziness in not looking up this drive, but is this drive SCSI? I know you mention turning off DMA for the drive, so it sounds like an IDE drive but it can be hard to tell. It it is an IDE, it could be connected to a problem with your IDE drivers. Might not hurt to take a look at installing them differently somehow. What sort of motherboard are you running this on anyway?
