I have upgraded my 486's hard drive. However when I take the old one out and plug the new one in my system asks for my Win 95 start up disk. Also the POST generates an error when it checks my hard drive. I am a complete novice living on a shoestring if anyone can help I would be very grateful. All I have is my original Win 95 CD Rom How do I install Windows onto the new drive?
Thanks
Mark.

Put your old HDD back into the computer and enter control panel. Open "Add/Remove programs" and you will see that there are three tabs to choose from. Click on start up disk and follow the instructions.
Did you try using both drives in the computer? Then you can just fill up the second at will.

Most likely you can't put the two drives in if you only have 1 IDE controller cable. with the CD-rom installed thats all folks..
But if you put the new drive in place of the CD-ROM you can do a XCOPY from the old to the new take the old out and set the new as master then put the CD-rom back in and Windows should boot as long as you Fdisk the new with an active partition and use
sys.com c:
from a bootable floppy.
Theorically this should work I've down it in the past with success.

486? What is your bios and how large is your new drive? If you have an old bios, it might not support an lba drive. Also, if your old drive parameters were forced in bios, change to autodetect.

First how big is your new drive? Does your bios see it? You might need to download a utility from your Hd manufacture, like ezdrive. It will setup your hd so that your bios can see it right.
after that you would need a cd rom setup disk
Here is mine (best thing is, it is free)

if you use ezdrive dont fdisk just install the cdrom drivers. after restarting your computer, put the windoz cd in and type
d:\
(press enter)
setup
(press enter)
you will get an error saying it cant run scandisk. don't worry just push esc to go on,
and folow the on screen instructions. that is it..easy..........
