Network Card Help

Hi, I just signed up for cable modem service and noticed they gave me a 10Mb/s PCI Ethernet card. Now, would I be able to run faster with a 100Mb/s PCI card hooke dup to my cable? I am using a Terayon Terra pro cable modem which can download and upload at 14Mb/s in parallel. ( petty sweet eh?? ) The cable comapny sent me an old D-Link network card, would I be able to run faster with a 100Mb card attached to the modem, or will it make a difference?'

C.Horner: I am afraid I am of no help here but I am interested in how cable modems are set up having never seen one. Is this an external unit connected through the NIC card? If it is the 100mb card would seem to me to be faster. What kind of connector and cable does the NIC<-->CableModem use? BNC/Coax or RJ45/cat5? Thanks

I seriously doubt it would make a difference. 10/100 Cards negotiate a speed with the hub they are connected to at start-up. If they see a 100 hub, they run at 100. If they see a 10 hub, they run at 10. If they see a dual speed hub, they run at 100. Of the three types of hubs, dual speed hubs are generally the most expensive. Since you know your cable modem runs at 10, the only way a faster card would improve throughput would be if it (the cable modem)had dual speed capabilities. I doubt if the cable modum manufacturer would find it cost effective, or even much of an advantage to add this capability.

My cable modem, err ALL cable modems, have one side of the cable wiring go to it. Then an RJ45 cable goes to your Hub Uplink port/Network card. I got mine hooked up to a hub for 2 comps, mmm i love my cable modem http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

okay lets clear it up.. if your modem is connected to the NIC. and you have a download speed of greater than 10mbs ..then yes a 100mb card would make it go faster...
