I have a PNP motherboard with built-in sound that WILL NOT detect ANY expansion card added to it! In ANY slot!! I've added a PCI video card, a PCI network card, an ISA network card, an ISA modem, everything I've got.
It will not detect new hardware when it boots, and when I use WIN95 "Detect New Hardware" in the settings, it doesn't find it either!!! This is driving me crazy, since I assembled this computer out of spare parts for my wife, so we'd have 2 PC's.
Right now I don't have the specs on the MB, and I can't tell you what it was. I think it's a cheap ASUS, but I'm not sure. Still, any advice is welcome!

What does it read at BIOS boot-up?

I have the manual at home (I'm at work right now). I'll post the MB brand and designation later this morning. I'll be out of town until sunday. Hope I come home to lots of helpful suggestions!

Check under system devices to see if 'plug and play BIOS' and 'IO read port for ISA plug and play enumerator' (also perhaps plug and play extensions).

Did a win98 re-install after a motherboard change recently and these devices wern't installed and plug and play wouldn't work. Installed 'plug and play BIOS' (which also installed the enumerator) and all was OK after.

Also some BIOS's have an option to turn plug and play off so check that.

I agree with steves. Check in the bios if there is a PNP option to turn it on\off.
