When you said in another psot "my cbale modem opened up to 2Mb both ways" what did you mean by that? Your ISP allows 2MB, or u set it for that? I have a Terayon modem, capable of 14Mb/s both ways, and my ISP only has currently 8 subscribers to their service runnign on an OC3 connection to the backbone. even local files I get a max of 110KBytes/s or 0.7Mb/s .... know any ways I can fix this, I think they put a download limit on the modem.
It's kinda a funny story!
I use a LanCity modem, leased from MediaOne. It's only $40 a month.
The tech rep told me that the box is set to limit the download rate to 330K/sec actual transfer rate max, and 33.6K/sec actual transfer rate uploading. This is just to have better rates than a T3 for downloading for almost no money, comparatively.
If I wanted more transfer rate as if I were a small business, for $3000 per month I could get up to 10M/sec both ways.
Their supposed to charge for this!
Well, I tried installing a TV card once, got it working after playing with resources. I was happy until I found that I couldn't connect to the internet anymore!
All this right after lightning smoked my second LanCity adapter, so naturally I was thinking this is a POS and its screwed, because the NIC passed all its internal testing and all settings were normal.
The MediaOne tech could ping the modem but not me, so he re-provisioned the box from his terminal to 2M/sec, as a trouble shooting tool. He then gave up and scheduled me to have it replaced again.
Well, I couldn't get the FM tuner part of the TV card to work, so I got tired of it and took it back out, while noticing my internet connection worked again!
The whole problem was a conflict of the NIC and WinTV card, that I couldn't detect. I called the MediaOne Tech office back and told then I figured the problem out and they cancelled the trouble call, the tech who reprovisioned me didn't remark it in his records, so my modem was never re-provisioned back down, so for now, I got a free ride on bandwidth!

PS: That was a year ago, still using the same modem with no problems!

man, that is awesome!! I wan't to get atleast 2Meg out of mine, cause it can do 14Megs both ways!!! Im stuck at 1 right now and it sucks after seeing what even a 2meg download/upload speed can do. Any Ideas???? hehe I need to trick them into giving me more bandwidth!

Just out of curiosity. You are all saying megs, as in Megabytes. 14megs is 14megabits= 1.75megaBYTEs a second. And thats at a max. My Cable is supposed to be 10mbit, and ive only ever gotten up to 200k... , of course i know 7 people for sure that also have this company, maybe we are overloading them http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif.

C.Horner, don't forget that just because your modem is capable of 14Mbits/s, that doesn't mean you will achieve that. Downloads are a two lane highway. Let's say for example that you are going to download a file from my FTP server running off of my 56k connection (another reason for you not to whine), the maximum rate you can possibly download it is going to be whatever rate I'm connected at, usually around 40kbits/s. Most servers are quite busy, so they can't possibly meet all of the bandwidth capabilities your modem has. And if I might say so myself, 110k/s is equivalent to what my school can get with its T1 connection, so I wouldn't complain! Later!

Oh, if it's REALLY bugging you, try playing with your MTU settings. That could help right there.
