Hello all
I have a site up but my ISP doesnt allow CGI scripting on my type of account, and needless to say i would rather not upgrade to a more expensive account purely for this need.
Basically i wondered if any of you knew HTML code for a visitor counter to my site. If possible could you include code for an image so i can substitute with my own. I use dreamweaver for the site but can use HTML moderately. Also within this code, would i be able to enter the number of PREVIOUS visits the site received (from my isp log files) and then start the counter from that point onwards?
Many thanks for your help in advance :t

Hmmm....HTML doesn't support any sort of management functionality that would allow this (storing data for later retrieval, that is).
Javascript would let you write cookies to people's machines, so you could store how many times a particular person has visited your site, but that's still not good enough.
...HTMLCounter.com (http://sv3.admo.net/counter/index.php) looks like it will host a counter for you for free though. Give it a look.

well i tried that link and it is an option, athough i feel they would have been displaying banners or those annoying pop ups. What i was thinking is that if u could use javascript for a page counter on a link. My site has an intro page so when people hit ENTER the counter simply adds 1 and displays in the next or index 1 page. Could somthing along these lines be done or would it be possible to write and embed a java applet within the webpage?
TY for your reply ScaryBinary

I guess you *could* write a non-server side scripting Java Applet that reads a text file on your server. It would be kind of like creating your own database.

Google for "Java Counter" (http://www.google.com/search?q=java+counter)
Lots of applets out there already. Also some sites that will host your counter, and NOT force you to have banners, ads, etc (for example, see ExtremeWebStats (http://www.extremewebstats.com/index.html)).

ty CompGeek01 and ScaryBinary for your replies. I looked into creating a stand alone java applet as a counter and page link, and seems too much trouble for what its worth.
ExtremeWebstats looks a very viable alternative which could be set up wihtin minutes. Will give this a try. Ty for the link ScaryBinary
