I just did another check and see prices still dropping. Here is the RETAIL box for the 3.4 GHz Northwood chip for only $277. Now that's a deal for that kind of processor speed!

The Dallas area Fry's stores are running an ad for a Northwood 2.4 800mhz and motherboard for $119.00.

I bought one .......... it's a cheapy ECS motherboard , but who cares ( I'll give that away).

That's incredible. I clearly remember in 1983 paying $3500 for a (Sears) original IBM 8088 machine with two floppy drives (no hard drive yet). Then in 1988 $3200. for an 386 512KB machine with one 50MB hard drive. Another time it was $2800 for a Pentium 3 166MHz machine. And that was in 1980's currency valuation. Today, I build my own and shop for only the best value. I learned my costly computer lessons well.

Kind of like being at an AA meeting confessing my past technology 'sins!!!'

You could build a complete 2.4 Ghz machine for under $400. with that Fry's setup. Smoke'n !
