Hello,
Just wondering what you all thought about current CPU performance comparisons.

I am designing a system that will primarily be used for application development; will ultimately end up as a terminal server running Linux for up to 3 pentium II terminals (typ. office apps and internet); will do some analogue video capture and editing; and hopefully also run an apache server and mail server. I am not a game player.

So I am wondering if a 3GHZ+ Prescott or dual 2.4GHz Xeon or AMD64 CPU will provide better performance for these apps? The remainder of the system (memory, hdd, vid etc) will be the same.

Cost wise there isn't much between them.
What do you all think?
Have a great day, and thanks for your toughts!
Al

Prescotts are a really sketchy investment with socket 775. I would avoid those. Next are Xeons, but you would have to get ECC registered ram, which is pretty expensive.

Your best bet by process of elimination is the A64. Go with a socket 939. If you can afford it, get a FX53. You may also be able to run a 64-bit distro of linux, depending on what you want to run.
