I'm just getting more confused the more I research this. one place shows a bunch of bridges that would need to be cut and an older Toms hardware article shows the same wire trick that I'm useing on my 2400.

http://www6.tomshardware.com/cpu/20030210/barton-07.html

I was conviced to get a Mobile chip after reading dragflameson's thread about getting to 2665 with his 2600 M. Started checking in to what it would take to unlock a 2500 Barton since I can get one locally for $89.00 and the Mobile for $99.00 and now I am confused as to which way to go

If the XP can be unlocked with the wire trick and/or a mother board I would probably go that way. If I have to cut bridges, I'll go with the mobile.

can anyone clear this up for me ? thanks.

Nforce 2 boards can enable multiplier adjustment on unlcoked CPU's such as the Tbred B's, Athlon Mobiles and EARLY Bartons. More recent bartons have all been multiplier locked, as such to enable multiplier adjustment on these CPU's, you need to paint one of the L5 bridges to turn them into (to all intents and purposes) a Mobile version (i.e. unlocked).

The XP Mobile's are unlocked out of the factory (as a result of their mobile, power-savign nature, dynamic multiplier adjustment is key to their usage in Laptops - which they were intended for usage in), however older Nforce 2 boards's (such as my 8rda+) cannot access higher ranges of multipliers (12.5x and upover) on them because of the way they decode multiplier settings. in order to access these higher multi's, you need to do a pin mod.

Given the considerably lower running heat and volatge of the mobile, and the fact they come factory unlocked, they are a much better and easier choice for the overclocker than the standard Barton's. If your capable of high FSB's (i.e. 200MHz) you wont need to access the higher range of multi's for great overclocks, and (if like me) you do need access to the higher multipliers the pin mod is relatively easy (i say relatively, i've not tried it yet) to do:

Hope that helps
