Long File Name Problem

I'm trying to help a young lady on another bbs. Her problem:

"I'm using Office 97 and Windows 95. For some reason I cannot create long file names in Word etc. I get the message "not valid
on an 8.3 systems". Do you know what that means???? How can I fix it?"

Any ideas?

Have her check in Ctrl panel/Performance/File Sys to see if it's in MS DOS compatibility mode, or if some of those boxes are checked.
