for some reason it usually has a harder time accessing burned cd's rather than normal cds. They usually take a lot longer to start working (access). Once they get going they're fine though. I've used various brands (Maxell, TDK, etc)

Anyway, I got a Win 98 cd (a Sony) and it doesn't seem to want to access at all, but I know for sure it worked on another compuer..

Any ideas?

Oh, and it seems to be getting worse too over time (over past year or so harder and harder to access some of the burned cds.. not the normal ones though.)

It's about 3 years old, btw. Not used too too much.

Oh one more thing. I checked.. All my blue cd's work, while the green ones do not (yet my older green ones used to work.)

This seems kinda wierd http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Have you tried one of those CD's that clean the lens of the laser that read's the disk, you can get one at any Music store that sells CD's, might work?

It's only an 8x? Probably an old drive then, and most older drives I have run into have a problem with some cdrs. Had to buy a new 32x to fix my problem with my old 8x not being able to read the cds.

I might try the head cleaner....

the fact that it was able to read these various burned cds and NOW it can't leads me to believe the laser head just needs cleaning..

that seem right?

Your newer cdrom drives have a faster data transfer rate and are multi-read compatable. They also have a faster access time. As cheap as they are getting I would buy a faster drive.
