Micropolis Drive Problems-
I am now having problems with two identical Micropolis 4421 SCSI hard drives. I had originally picked up four drives. Two of the drives are defective (1 4421 & 1 4245NS)(They spin up and spin down).
Two of the 4421 drives appear to work fine. I have a DPT PCI Fast SCSI controller and used Windows 98 FDISK to set up the drives then formatted them originally. No bad sectors or problems in the process, the operation was flawless.
Now I need to install them in two Macintosh systems (Quadra 660AV & PowerPC 6100/60) as upgrades. I worked with the first drive and attempted to install it on the 660AV as SCSI 0. I used Apple Hard Disk Setup 1.7.2 (The newest version from Apple) and the process was flawless once again. I copied the System folder (8.1) to one of the new Micropolis drives and everything went well until I tried to reboot from the Micropolis. The system starts to boot and then it chokes (The MAC face disappears and the screen turns black). There are no conflicting SCSI devices. I reinitialized and tried the process again just getting the same results over and over. I tried a Low Level Format and Zero Fill under Apple Hard Disk Setup and it was successful. When everything was copied again I still get the same problem. I even ran Norton Utilities 4.0 (Disk Doctor) and TechToolPro 2 on the target and destination drives and found only minor file problems. I did a media scan on the Micropolis and the drive is clean. I used Hard Disk Tool Kit 3.0 from FWB to initialize the drive and tried the copy again but when I rebooted from the Micropolis the machine gave me an "Illegal Instruction" error. I haven't had time to try the other drive or a Low Level format using Hard Disk Tool Kit or to try and install the O.S. from CDROM but I have a feeling I will run into the same problems. I have copied the system folder before without problems. Are there any jumper settings that are required for proper use of a Micropolis on a Macintosh? (Spindle Sync? Terminator Power To Bus? Key 0? ID's?)
Thank You!!!
