Read my answers to "Roy / suspense" here.

The fan does not start until the system powers up. The PS/mobo connector has a lock on one side. Squeeze it to release.

With everything in place, it should work. After going through a very steep learning curve, your problem points to two possibilities:

1. - Bad PS - can you check it on another system? Remember, it may need to rest and forget if it has been insulted by the motherboard.

2. - Bad motherboard. Unfortunately, the diagnostics for your situation require substitution. The PS is easiest to move.

If the PS has a power switch on the back, surely you have tried it in both positions. The "O" is off, the "|" is on.

I hope you bought either the case or mobo locally. It makes it so much easier to deal with problems. But then, my mobo came from the other side of the continent.

Good Luck. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

thanks,

I purchased to case w/ power supply for $39... locally. Is the cheap price a good sign for a funked up power supply? A ful tower ATX w/ ps did seem a little to good to be true. O well. I keep trying to release the PS cable from the mobo but it seems locked? Its clipped on to the mobo but it wont release...any more suggestions? thanks again

Before removing Power Supply try diconnecting
all devices - hard drives, CD-Roms, Disc Drive. Then try to start.
Note: When I built my system the switch on the new case was bad and I had to fix that before I could do anything. To get by the problem I plugged the
reset switch to the on switch location at the mother board, then used my reset switch as the Main on. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Since yours is an ATX system, the power is turned on by a low voltage switch simular to a reset button. Make sure your jumper cable from the swith is hooked up to the correct pair on the MOBO. You might also try removing the power switch jumper and shorting the power-on pins on the MOBO for 1-2 sec with a screwdriver. If the switch is bad, this will turn on an ATX system

I had the motherboard connections reversed. Thanks for your help. I'm able to get every thing boot now. Video, Hard drive, but I'm confused about the floppy and cdrom. I connected the floppy drive and I'm getting a solid light when I boot. Is this correct? I read somewhere that it was Ok. Also apon initial boot up the dvd-rom isn't showing. I have it connected as a slave to the hard drive. should it be showing? what do I do next? configure bios? load windows 98 boot disk? how do I load the boot disk? Thanks again

Floppy - you have the power connector on the drive reversed.
DVD - go into the bios and see if and how you have that drive detected - it may have that drive set to NONE.
Assuming your hard drive is empty - your just starting - just put in windows 98 boot disk, fdisc - format - install your OS. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Further to what Gentle Giant said . . .

Floppy drive - It's the data cable that is reversed.

DVD drive - TIP! It would be better to connect this drive as Master on the Secondary IDE connector.

Last night I finished putting my system together and everthing in connected perfect,(I check a hundred times),but I'm not getting any power whatsoever. The power supply fan IS NOT moving so I figure I must have a bad power supply. I thought that the power supply fan was supposed to move no matter what. Regardless of the MO/BO configuration. Is this correct? I've been trying to disconnect my power supply from the mother board but it wont come out! I'm afraid I'll ruin the MOBO if I pull any harder. PLEASE HELP! here are the components I'm attempting to boot with:

ABIT BM6 W/ CELERON 300A

BANSHEE 16MEG AGP VIDEO CARD

ATX TOWER W/ 250 WATT POWER

I appreciate any help.

Yes, thanks DavidX.

I'll second DavidX on the DVD. When the BIOS setup goes to detect it, it isn't there. It is handled differently by ATAPI software and not seen as a regular drive.

As Roy said, The PS/MOBO connector has a locking clip. Try pushing on the connector as you conpress the top of the connector lock, then pull up.

Aaaahhh, youth. Devil may care, hell-for-leather, seat of the pants computer building. No worries about blowing hundreds of dollars worth of components away in a cloud of ozone. Keep at it kid, you've got the right stuff. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
