Thanks, but I've already tried that. It just opens up Internet Explorer to view the JPG image. Then when I try to preview in Windows Explorer again it doesn't do anything when I click on it (no preview). It also changes my JPG extension to:

Action: "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Iexplore.exe %1"

and turns off DDE.

I still Can't preview! Weird!

oh you mean the thumbview.. not the preview..

That is done with the folder.. in which you place the JPG in.. what you do is.. right click on the folder in which you put the jpgs.. or downloads.. and click properties.. and then put a check to enable thumbview.. and it will enable the little thumbview on files in that folder only.

To Jin Vitas,

Could it be that simple? I'll have to give it a try when I get home. I'm at work and we only have Windows 95 here.

I was trying to be specific in my problem description by stating one mouse click on JPG image files. But next time, I'll try and use the right lingo - thumbview.

Thanks a bunch!!!!!!

In the 98 Windows Explorer I've lost the ability to preview JPG images when
the file is clicked once. I've got the view setting set to 'as Web page'.
My GIF files preview fine.
I unistalled photoshop 4.0 and I think that had something to do with it.

Under view/folder options/file types tab, I have these settings for
JPEG/JPE/JFIF/JPG extensions (for the 'open' action):

Action: "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Iexplore.exe" -nohome

DDE message: "file:%1",,-1,,,,,

Application: IExplore

Topic: WWW_OpenURL

I have all the latest critical windows 98 updates installed.

How do I get the preview back for JPG files?
Help!

My folder had enable thumbview already checked! When I tried to uncheck it, windows 98 said it is unable to do that at this time.

Anyway, I edited the registry and fixed it that way. I'm not really sure what I did right but it was missing a CSID key and value. Now I see thumbviews of my JPG images OK now.

I don't think that enable thumbview has much to do with it. I said that only because I have other folders that display thumbviews without that being enabled!

The whole thing is strange. What can I expect from Windows next...

Hi:

I had that problem once too...it happened after I uninstalled a photo editor...I think it was photoshop...

After frustrating me, I just uninstalled Iexplorer, and then reinstalled it...trouble, yes, but it worked...

Good Luck...

oh you should of told me.. it didn't work earlier.. because if it was check you could of did this.

regsvr32.exe /i shdocvw.dll

that would of solved your problem

it reinstalls the windows desktop update.

To Jin Vitas,

Thank you for that last bit of info. I'll write it down for future refrence.

If you like explaining more about how the command works, that would be great.

Thank you all!

To Jin,

P.S. I didn't know whether thumbviews were enabled or not until I went home to look on my computer. All these posts I left were written while I'm at work (and we use windows 95 not 98).

This behavior can occur if you remove and re-create the file association
for a file type.. The registry entry used by the Windows Desktop Update
component to display Thumbnail images is not updated properly when you re-
create the file association....

Therefore restoring the registry entries using regsvr32.exe for the windows desktop update will fix this problem.
