64-Bit XP is expected out at the beginning of 2005, Windows Longhorn however is still looking like 2006

64bit XP in 2005? I think I'm confused.

Wasn't there a 64bit XP already?

Is the 64bit XP going to be a normal XP OS? but with 64bit support? ie. something that 64bit Proc users would buy?

Longhorn is a different OS? and 64bit as well?

There are Beta versionf of XP-64 flaating around, but its nowhere near the finished article yet. XP-64 is indeed, XP with 64-Bit specific extensiosn to enhance performance on 64-Bit CPU's.

Longhorn meanswhile is MS' next new desktop Operating System

If M$ delays long enough on XP 64 bit, we'll just get it when longhorn comes out. They seem to push back release dates alot lately. And then they still use us as BETA testers ( read SP2)

The culprit for which is SP2, getting SP2 out of the door has seriously ballsed up the progress of Longhorn, Server 2003 SP1 and XP-64

That's true, but with all the reported troubles with SP2, I wonder if they shouldn't have delayed it a bit longer?

Its a case of "Half-Life 2 Syndrome", if you arent seen to be rushing (or even rush release for that matter) to get a long anticipated application out of the door (e.g. HL2 and SP2) then everyone gets on your back. If you do rush to put it out and quench public anticipation, it ultimatley ends up under-developed and with more holes than JM's socks...and evryone gets on your back.

It's a vicious circle which all programmers face, for this reason i never bemaon developers for makign delays (though i will make an exception for 3dRealms)

In all honesty, I'd prefer that they took the time to do it right ( or at least as best as possible ) the first time, regardless of the release date. I'm tired of getting updates that cause as many if not more trouble than they fix. I guess though that they are bowing to public pressures and most people want it yesterday and correct as well. :(
