How can I install win98 onto an external scsi hard drive? I just put a PCI scsi adaptor into the computer and connected the drive to it. I can use the drive fine, but I would like for this drive to be the boot drive. My bios has the option to select a scsi device in the boot sequence but I haven't had any luck. Any help will be appreciated.

Most of the time if you have an IDE hard drive and a SCSI hard drive, you cannot boot to the SCSI drive, you must remove the IDE drive, If you have two SCSI drives in the computer the one with the lowest SCSI ID# will be the boot drive.

You can do this but all scsi cards are not alike. I have not had a problem booting to a scsi drive with an ide in the computer as log as the system bios, like yours allows you to specify the scsi as the boot device. Many scsi cards are sold primarily for scanners or adding a single devise and do not have booting capability. Scsi cards that allow booting, typically have a boot-time accessible bios all their own which allow you to configure them to look for boot devices. The ones sold for hooking up scanners, etc don't have this feature. Boot your system and see if you get a message to hit control-c (or some key stroke) to configure the scsi card during boot up. If you don't, my guess is that you have one of the cards that does not permit booting.

As I stated in my above post most systems do not allow you to boot to a SCSI hard drive with an IDE hard drive installed, even with a SCSI controller with a bios, and even if the BIOS on your motherboard say something like: boot sequence: SCSI, A, C
what this allows is booting from a bootable SCSI CD rom drive with a bootable CD in it (Such as the Windows 98 CD ) it does not allow you to boot to a SCSI hard drive if you have an IDE drive installed. Below is a Question taken from Adaptecs Web Site in the Frequently Asked Questions, Hardware section
Q: Is it possible to run an IDE or ESDI controller in the
same system with a SCSI host adapter?

A: Yes. The IDE or ESDI disk drive will always be the boot
device. SCSI cannot take this function away from these
controllers.

I disagree. I have several systems running with scsi drives as the boot drive with one or more ide drive(s) funtioning as storage drives. I am utilizing diamond fireport scsi cards but I don't see why adaptec cards would make a difference.
