I was wondering if anybody knows how to keep 'starter.exe' from running at startup. I have win95B and Creative Labs PCI 128 sound card. Under Close Program I see 'starter'. If I end task the Mixer icon is gone from the taskbar. Under HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\currentVersion\run I find the string EnsoniqMixer with the value "starter.exe". I have deleted this string and rebooted only to find it right back where it was. I have searched RunOnce,RunServices,HKusers and HKCurrentUser to no avail. Also Win.INI for load or run no help. I don't need this service running in the background.Any ideas out there?
Thanks

This is the file that puts the volume control icon in your taskbar, if you want to be able to control your volume with software it needs to be there, if you have an external switch that controls the volume or don't care if you can control the volume, uncheck the box where it says: show volume control on the taskbar, in the Multimedia section in the control panel, I think this will get rid of it

LJE2: Thanks for the thoughts but if I end task the 'starter' in ctrl-alt-del close program the volumn control is still there and the mixer icon is gone. I am on a mission to have as little running in the background as possible. Just trying to see why I have such a slow shutdown as I do. Since I networked the three computers the shutdown for this one is horrible.
It is a new Tyan Tsunami P-II 350 w/6.4wd hdd with Netgear fa310tx cards that I love. Just trying to investigate what is taking so long. Thanks

edit- The show icon in taskbar is already unchecked BTW.

sourjon, I had and Ensoniq PCI sound card which is the same as the Creative Labs PCI 128, I deleted the volume control from windows, using the add/remove programs and then going to Windows setup, and then to Multimedia and unchecking the volume contol, right now you have the volume control (the little yellow speaker) and the mixer control (run by the starter.exe program) you don't need both you can control the volume and much more from the mixer control. So delete the volume control in Windows, when you install the software to add the driver for the sound card, starter.exe is also installed, I don't know how to get rid of this, sorry I couldn't be of anymore help

You can stop it from the registry. Go to the H_KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\cur rent version\ run, runonce, runonceex, runservices and runservicesex keys and remove the thing from any of those keys.

Thats the only way, but it doesn't really make much difference, so I just learned to live with the mixer instead of the volume control.

Thanks for the replies guys.
BBA I have done as you suggest and rebooted only to find the string rewritten! Something is rewriting that string every time. I will have to do as you say and live with it or shut it down when ever I boot up. Making sure that I have as little to unload as possible has speeded up the shutdown some but it still is very slow. The 2-NT boxes are no problem. So I am patiently awaiting for W98SE. Appreciate the help.

Have you tried msconfig yet?

Start/Run
Type: msconfig
Under the Startup tab, all the programs being loaded can configured to load or not.

Also in msconfig, there is an Advanced button that will aid in trouble shooting.

Sometimes if there is an icon in the Startup folder, it may reload, even after using msconfig. So dump it into the trash and use msconfig again. Sometimes. I vaguely remember that happening with a CLabs icon.

Bleeding edge: If only I could. Unforunately I have W95B. All I get from msconfig is the error'...seems to be missing...'.Waiting for W98SE. If I get 98 now I have seen on the MS site that the updates to the original are going to be fixes only and no added features. Want wait for the built in proxy in SE.

I'm sorry, I forgot I had to actually delete the **** thing also. Only one of the many reasons I like the SB-Live so much.

PS: you can also edit the icon itself so that it looks like the windows speaker icon and then tell windows not to show the volume control icon in multimedia properties.

What I ended up doing is renaming starter.exe starter1.exe so if I need the mixer at some point I start | run | starter1 and I have it.The system seems happy enough with this fix. No revolts yet!

Sorry. I just noticed that's one of the first things you pointed out.

I recall that Win95 has a limited tshooting features in System Properties' advanced settings for the File System.
