i am trying to build a system from scratch using a pentium 100 on a gateway motherboard with phoenix bios and a connor scsi drive and an adaptec AVA 1505/1515 controller card. how do i begin. i can not get the system to accept the hard drive. it has no operating system on it and i need to format it but cannot get it to even let me set it up. i do not know where to begin. can someone help me out?

You need to start your computer with a boot disk in the floppy drive (make sure that "seek floppy drive at start up is enabled in the BIOS) and boot sequence is A:/C: make sure that along with the system files that format and fdisk are also included on floppy, if you don't have a boot disk you can use the 1st DOS disk (I believe, it's been awhile since I have installed DOS, but by the sounds of your machine it might have come with DOS and Windows 3.11) the computer will boot to an A prompt. type: fdisk and hit enter, then set your partition, when fdisk is completed, reboot with the boot disk in the floppy drive again and at the A prompt type: format c:/s and hit enter, when done reboot, this will allow you to boot to the hard drive.
