Did you ever breathe life back into that LX board you had?

Roy 06-04-1999, 04:31 PM Thanks for asking. I don't usually cruise this forum, just happened by. I have the two power supplies that were presumed dead here at work on a bench with an old ATX board we use for testing. Both would not work with the suspect board, and when moved to my BX6-2, also would not work. A third PS that was OK with the BX6-2 also would not work with the LX board. What was worse, it would not work with the BX when returned there. At least not until the next morning, when everything was OK. So the 2 suspect supplies come up and read all correct voltages on the test board. The only thing they won't do is shut down with the ATX "momentary contact" soft switch. Killing the AC power shuts them down, and the soft switch brings them back up. I suspect this is because there is no CPU on the test board. Advanced Power Management allows the CPU to shut down the supply, so its absence appears to be the reason the switch might not. The next step is to take these supplies home and put them on the BX. I bet they'll be fine. Then one of them will go into the LX board's case for delivery to a friend who is putting together a new ATX system. I'll get a new mobo and case for my Web system when I'm sure everything else is OK. The lesson I think I have learned is that the ATX power supply seems to remember it was hooked to a problem board and takes a night's sleep to forget. If these two both work on the BX, I'll know for sure. Then I'll update this thread to let everyone know. DavidX 06-04-1999, 05:22 PM Good grief, those pesky little power supplies are sooo touchy! Two not working quite properly yet (I agree it may be the lack of a CPU on your test board) and the third has just one contact with the bad LX and it sulks the whole night? I cannot think of a logical reason why the PS wouldn't work at all on a good board after being on the LX, then after a few hours it settles down and decides to work again. Is everything else that was used with that LX board okay then? (hard drives, etc) It does seem to have been BIOS corruption. But I wonder how? I suppose it could have been the CIH virus but . . . Keep us posted, Roy. [This message has been edited by DavidX (edited 06-04-99).] Roy 06-04-1999, 10:19 PM The results are in! Just as I suspected, I have three good supplies. I have the third one because I went through some of the same things several months ago and concluded that the supply in the LX case was dead. So I replaced it and set it aside for repair "some day". Well today was that day and the rest is history. I don't know why these guys remember insults the way they do, but now we all know to let them rest and probably recover. All this in the name of Advanced Power Management. Whew! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif P.S. Anyone want a highly suspect Intel AL440LX with onboard sound? It probably will work just fine, until it gets grouchy. I'm never going to run it again, myself. [This message has been edited by Roy (edited 06-04-99).] DavidX 06-05-1999, 07:26 PM I'll never underestimate a power supply again. They obviously have minds of their own! I guess there must be a rational explanation but . . . Think I'll pass on that LX board http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif Thanks for the info, Roy. It's always useful to hear other people's experiences. SysOpt.com
