It looks fun, but it doesn't look really visually impressive.

Looks visually impressive to me...textured floors, advanced lighting, detailed smoke effects, not to mention the realistic physics, not to mention the suprisingly high framerates their test system was able to achieve at 1600x1200 resolution.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's ugly. I'm just saying that with all this hype around the greatness of HL2/Source I was expecting a little better.

I agree that the hype for this engine has been way too much. I myself am not looking forward to the graphics and such, rather i'm looking forward to the game physics, lighting, etc.

... i'm glad it doesnt look AMAZing...(to be honest i think it looks VERY good) i could care less if it looked better then doom3 or farcry or anything... as long as its a good game... i didnt even pass the first level of doom3 and i have already sold it... it just wasnt fun. i dont care how games look anymore i want games that are fun. i find myself going tback to CS and Wc3 all the time... there not stunning to look at there just good old fun games.

A lot of people who have played it have stated that screenshots simply dont do it justice, apparently the attention to small details (dust particles, sand grains, lighting etc) is amazing, yet never detracts from the main focus of the game.

Plus we've only seen one map thus-far, and a remake at that - as such it was never going to be massively different (indeed, theres probably more to lose - in terms of fanbase - in changing CS:S massively) also of course there is only so much that you can do to make sand look impressive

Perhaps in HL3 each grain of sand will be unique and the player will be able to pick up an individual grain :) Now that is how to make sand look impressive!

I don't know about sand, but the engine that will let you do that will be impressive that's for sure. :D :t
