My BIOS (HP Pavilion 6370Z) currently have these settings:

Primary Master IDE: HDD
Primary Slave: Zip 100MB

Secondary Master IDE: CDROM
Secondary Slave: CDROM-RW

My zip WAS the secondary slave. I had to switch it with the CDROM-RW to make
the CDROM-RW work with Exec Backup 98 (but that's a different story).

When I booted for the first time with the above configuration, Windows 98
assigned my Zip drive as drive B: (with a floppy icon).

I set my BIOS to make the Zip disk be a 'Fixed' drive. That made Windows 98
assign a drive D: to my Zip (which is what I want). When I use Windows Explorer I
still see a 3 1/2" floppy icon as drive D: With Iomega tools software installed:-
When I open My Computer folder, the blue Zip icon appears but with a description
of 3 1/2" floppy. The Windows Explorer still shows drive D: with a floppy icon.

I could live with the 3 1/2" floppy icon if it weren't for the other problems.
Sometimes, when I insert a Zip disk, I get the Windows floppy not initialize dialog
box. It wants to initialize it as a floppy. This happens even when I know the Zip
disk has already been initialized (prior to all these problems).

Now, I have uninstalled Iomega tools. This allows me to access my zip disks fine.
But I need to get rid of the floppy icon and I want to reinstall the Iomega tools
again. Because drive D: is somehow associated as a floppy Iomega tools software
does not let me view/use my zip disks period.

I have all the latest critical windows 98 updates installed.

How do I get rid of the 3 1/2" floppy icon attached to my Zip?

I have the ability to change the windows registry using Norton Registry editor. So,
I can do that if that's what it takes, however, I don't know what to change in the
registry.

Try removing the drive
in Device Manager.
Then reboot.
Windows should detect the drive
correctly, if not then reinstall
Iomega software

I wish it was that simple. I've deleted the driver, edited the registry to remove any traces of a floppy or zip, unhooked the IDE cable from the zip (to make the system think it's not there so I can start fresh again). But once I boot It assigns drive D: fine and installs the driver, but the floppy icon remains!!

At the HP web site I found a BIOS update that I will try tonight. I currently have a Phoenix BIOS ver 1.08 and the update is 1.09.
Maybe that might help things.

Thanks for the input.

You do not want to autodetect the Zip drive in the BIOS. This will almost always show the zip as another floppy usually shows it as drive b. You will have to take the drivers out for the zip--disable autodetect in the bios and then install the zip.

To Bud,

Thanks, that's info. I didn't know. I might try another reinstall, but I don't think I can turn off Auto Detect. I'll take a closer look tonight and see.

Right now, my status is:

1) I flashed my BIOS with the newest version (1.09). Still had to specify the zip as a fixed drive (for windows 98 to recognize it as D http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif. If I don't, it gets assigned as B: and under the device manager, the B: is grayed out (not allowed to reassign B: to D http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif.
2) I downloaded Iomega's latest zip drivers and installed it.
3) My system shows my Zip as drive D:
4) But when I view the zip from the My Computer folder, it shows a description of 3 1/2" floppy with the correct blue zip icon.
5) Now my zip works with Iomega software loaded (which it wasn't before).

So, I have to look into being able to assign it as a "removable" device and somehow get rid of this 3 1/2" floppy description.

But at least it works for now. Thanks all!
