I got new 8.4GB Quantum CR HDD (it is ATA/66).
I installed windows98 on it. I want to enable DMA but I cant. I check the DMA box in device manager and after windows restart the checkbox is unchecked. I get a big cpu utilizacion 96% (tested with HDTach). What could I do to enable the DMA in win98 for my hdd?
please help
thanks

Have you enabled auto detect or dma in your bios?

Another thing to think about is this.
I have a DMA usable hard drive and a DMA usable CD-ROM drive, but if I enable DMA on both units I am unable to overclock as fast as without DMA enabled.
Apparently DMA acces does not like 124 MHz FSB speeds. I prefer the speed and am willing to give up the DMA access advantages.
what kind of machine is it?Intel,Amd or what?
Some busmaster drivers will enable the dma but will not put a check mark in the box or allow you to.Also,if it is enabled in the bios i do believe it is on(right guys?).
Not real familiar with ata66 busmastering but this may be the case with the drivers for it.Did you have to install new drivers when you installed the drive?

I've noticed a little bug in windows that is as follows:
The first time you check the DMA box and press OK, nothing happens, the checkmark does not stick.
The trick is after clicking OK the first time, you are returned to the Device list. Now,select your drive again, go back to settings and recheck the box. Click OK, this time the system will require you to reboot. This is your confirmation the check mark stuck. Reboot the machine, verify the checkmark and all should be fine.
