My speakers have been buzzing between MP3s, etc., for a long time now. I finally figured out that if I mute the CD audio on the volume control, the buzzing goes away. Now, is this normal, or is there a fix? Maybe I need a better quality audio cable between the CD and the motherboard? (Onboard sound pro...) This buzzing is annoying, but I also hae the idea of leaving this muted all the time... Any ideas? Thanks for any advise.

Eli,

The buzzing is usually cause by electromagnetic interference...the main cause is improper shielding in the wires that are close to a power source...also loose conections will cause a buzzing sound....to check for this wiggle the speaker wires where they connect to either the computer or speaker while they are buzzing (dont mute it!) and if it goes away you have a poor connection.

Good luck

I've even tried different speakers. The only thing that helped is to mute the CD audio... Oh well, I might just have to live with it. Thanks for the advise.

do you have any jumpered amplifiers on the sound card???

that may cause that as well...had to shut my amp on my soundcard off...but now im using a 60watt kenwood amp...hehe

That sounds like your using an unshielded CD-Sound card cable, or it's grounds are bad.

I would get a new cd cable and route it away from all fans and harddrives.

Thanks guys, that's pretty much what I was thinking. Now that I think about it, I do have another cable lying around... I'll have to try it. And I think the existing one is routed directly under the PS... Hmm...

jokostel, the sound card is built into the motherboard (Another source on interference?), and has no amp jumpers. Thanks for the suggestion though.

If replacing the cable does not work I would disable windows APM

I disabled APM when my monitor stopped waking up... I could try turning off that creaky old ceiling fan. Worth a shot, eh? Thanks for the advise guys. It's probably just where the cable is routed (Under the PS). I haven't gotten around to re-routing it yet. Thanks again.

Well, I tried rerouting the cable with no change. I did notice that the buzzing went away when I disconnected the cable from the drive... Could it be a problem in the drive itself? Maybe a bad ground or something? It's a 24x Cyberdrive, or something like that. Thanks again.
