I open the display settings and click the "smartgart" tab which has the agp speed settings. the slider is always at 0x and the little window says curent setting off. if i hit retest or slide the bar to 8x(or even 4x) and reboot, it stays for a few seconds and then reverts back. if i check the smartgart, it says 0x again. my mobo is 8x compliant gigabyte ga-7vax. athlon xp 1800. i've recently upgraded to xp from 98se(which went smooth)updated everything bios, catalyst 4.9 , dx 9.0c,,,, a little help,,..??? what am i missing? My Doom 3 is a little choppy.

are your motherboard drivers installed?
Doom 3 running choppy may be because of the 1800+ not your video card anyways.
The fact that you are running the 4.9's may have something to do with it...did this happen when you had the 4.7's installed?

I think they're via 4n1's for the chipset, i tried to update those recently but windows said the best driver was already installed. i'll try again. Am i expecting too much from my comp with doom? thanx.

Chipset drivers go a LONG way in most games' performance. But if that's not the case, it's probably your processor. My 1800+ is aging too :(

Yessss, I installed the drivers from the mobo disc and it is firing on all cylinders now. I think I had a geforce 2 mx440 64mb before and it only loaded the drivers for that kind of card. the 9800 is a 3.0 version or whatever and now the right driver is installed for it. Now bring on some DOOOOOOMMMMM, thanx for the help people!
