I find it a little annoying that when you map drive in XP it starts with the last letter available (eg: Z:\, Y:\, X:\, etc.) instead of the first letter available alpha wise.

Is there a way to change this?

I know this is a weird one, and kind of petty, but does anyone have any ideas??

I am assuming it is a change somewhere in the registry....??

You're right - it is petty. This technique makes more sense because you aren't likely to bump a mapped network drive at work.
