Hiyas,

I have this annoying problem with my setup. I recently bought:

ABIT BX6
Intel Celeron 400 Mhz Socket 370 Processor
ABIT Slocket Adaptor
SAMSUNG 6.4 Gig Hard Drive

I then used all the old parts from my machine to fill up the rest, these parts are:

S3 Virge 325 with 4 Meg RAM
2x 32Meg 66Mhz Dimms

The rest is network cards, sound cards etc.

The problem is when im in windows the machine will suddenly hang for no reason at all, windows completely freezes up, can move the mouse at all. There is no error message returned. I have tried changing the memory, to no avail, reinstalled win98, to no avail. I think it could have something to do with the graphics card, i tried changing the drivers, but I think it may be the graphics card itself.

If anyone could give me some ideas or have had similar problems then let me know.

Thanks for your help and time...

Can you get the CTRL+ALT+DEL window to appear to see if a program has done a (not responding). I find if you end task certain programs during a lockup the system returns to normal--- remember though Explorer and Systray Have to stay up and running to prevent a system unstable condition. Also look for programs that are loading 2 or more times since this will cause a system freeze toooo.

philipg - unfortunatly i cant get the window up, the system is completely dead. Hardware reset needed

Jin Vitas - i dont think it could be overheating, the fan on the processor works, its not overclocked, and the motherboard monitor returns 30-32 degress with the case on. It seems to be only in windows. It can run games for hours and hours without any problems, so this kind off eliminates the heat problems.

Thanks for your input guys

Actually not. Like Jin said, it can be overheating. Games are much more CPU and video card intense than most other programs. So as always, you should consider what Jin said 'cause he knows what he is talking about.

Yeah...which means more heat, right? - From my experience the more you work a chip the hotter it gets - so the computer being able to run games without crashing, but crashs when you run something in windows, after being idle for anything up to an hour kind off eliminates the heat theory. Another factor here is that the chip is not overclocked, running at default voltage, the processor fan is working properly and the heatsink is properly fixed to the processor.

Thanks. Please Flame.

well if you think it is the video card then turn down the hardware acceleration.. under system properties performance tab

It may be overheating.. run it with the cover off. and see if it locks.
