I need a CD-RW or DVD-RW burning package to replace the lousy Drag n' Drop(R) that came with my burner.

The new Roxio and Nero have enormous bloat, packaging a lot of stuff I don't need (i.e. cartoon characters) along with a risk some stay-resident feature will slow down my system or prevent alternate burning software from running. All I really want is a browser-like interface (e.g. EZ-CD Creator v.4) and the ability to read/write ISO files. MP3 and Movie stuff is great, but the file stuff is crucial.

In addition to Roxio and Nero, I've come across Gear DVD (http://www.gearsoftware.com/products/dvd/index1.cfm), (expensive!) Alchohol 120 (http://www.alcohol-soft.com/) (which can mount ISO files like regular volumes), and NTI CD&DVD Maker (http://www.ntius.com/default.asp?p=cdmaker/cdmaker_main). Anyone have any experience with these?

I usually do the try before buy thing, but trying this kind of software has done bad things to my system in the past, i.e. never fully uninstalling. Any recommendations for someone who likes things simple and fast?

You can install either of those ( Roxio or Nero ) without installing everything.

I, like you, dont like all the extra fancy stuff ill never use. Just do an advanced install and uncheck about everything.

Then after doing the install, run msconfig and uncheck everything that the burner program added and restart.

I run Roxio and Nero on various systems and this is how ive always installed them. They dont run in the background unless I call them up and they are promptly closed when I am done.

For working with ISO files I use a seperate program called MAGICISO. Cost me $30 I think but it has been worth every penny
