This either appears to be urban legend or a very technical stretch of the facts. The quote has been previously circulated and has been denied by Microsoft. The company will not allow pirates to install XP SP2 from their official sites.

Unverifiable PIDs will not be allowed to install the V5 Windows Update. Without the V5 Windows Update, Microsoft will not allow access to XP SP2. Microsoft is constantly scouring the internet for PIDs. PIDs that were verifiable a few weeks ago, may now be on the unverifiable list.

XP SP2 RC2 from third party sites have been able to be installed to PCs running XP SP1. Whether or not the official release of XP SP2 will be able to be installed is another matter. Once installed, XP SP2 has required the installation of V5 to get further updates from Microsoft.

Those with questions concerning the validity of their XP PID should do a Google for "V5 Windows Update" and go to the Microsoft site and see if it will install. If not, they should contact their vendor. They may have been sold a bogus copy of XP.

Once installed, XP SP2 has required the installation of V5 to get further updates from Microsoft.

But not everyone uses the online windows update. See there are still majority on dial up.

MS still releases those fixes/patches in downloaded formats(WXXXX KBXXX .exe).

I don't have XP(just ordered, hopefully it will come sp2 integrated) but i have never used "Windows update" for 2kpro. Offlate its been like typing in google "Windows Security Updates for July 2004" and you get all updates on a single page.

Unless MS do some kinda product checking with the downloadable updates. But i don't think thats going to happen.

What will and will not be done is a matter of conjecture. But I would imagine the V5 updater will be included on the Disk and it won't be able to be loaded with known bogus keys. Those able to get hold of a third party copy of SP2 might not be able to get further updates without V5.

But that's just a problem for those with bogus keys.

It certainly does appear that Microsoft is allowing pirate keys to install SP 2 and the V5 updater. First they were. Then they weren't. Now they are; at least for now!
