My computer keeps restarting by itself. My system:
Bx6 2.0, 300a, 128mb pc100, Voodoo3 3000, 12.9G IBM GXP, HP CDR-W, SB Live, Linksys LAN, Inwin full tower. I've tried changing power supplies, ram, 300@450. I'm at my wits end here. Help please!
email me at rickstewart@home.com

I ran that program and says i don't have CIH.
I read somewhere that it might be an IRQ conflict?? how do i know if i have a conflict?

Go to the site below and do a search for restart. Let us know if that helps.

It said to edit my autoexec.bat by taking out the win.com line...i didn't have that line in my autoexec.bat.

Boot into safe mode and go into device manager. Look for any exact duplicate entries there. If there are any, delete both of them. After going through all your devices, restart your system from a cold boot.

If you are having any further troubles, post your bat & sys files here.

Let us know what happens.

Did it ever run properly? Is this a new system? I would suspect this might be a hardware issue.

1. Make sure your jumper settings on the motherboard are correct.

2. Make sure the CPU is not overclocked.

3. Are you sure the ram is compatiable with your motherboard?

4. How far does it get before it reboots?

5. Does it automatically reboot in safe mode?

6. Can you get to a command prompt? If not, can you boot using your startup disk and get to a command prompt?

7. What operating system are you using?

Let us know.

It's only a few months old.
It does it at 300mhz and 450mhz.
I've tried pc100 LGS (2 sticks) and pc133 Crucial (1 stick).
It usually does it when i'm playing a game or opening a large file.
When it does happen it's as if someone pushed the reset button. I've tried switching my reset and power buttons (no change)
My motherboard uses Soft Menu, the only jumper on the board is for my CMOS.

Don't you just love it when they won't answer your questions? I guess we type on this forum for our health. Hey, it must work. I'm feeling better already (lol).

Did you make sure you had the advanced power management off in windows, AND the BIOS?? Also, I had a winmodem driver that caused the same thing once.Maybe one of your hardware drivers is outdated??

Rick Stewart
05-30-1999, 06:05 PM
Power management was already off.

ever think your problem might be when your system restarts on its own your on the internet through your modem or network card, and the problem is people are getting into your system through netbus and restarting it over and over! might not be your case but its something to think about!

How can i prevent that from happening?
I have two computers connected to my hub, and the other one doesn't have this problem.
I really appreciate all the replies that i've gotten.

Try checking for the W95.CIH virus (chernobyl) if you haven't already.

Free CIH cleaner here:
http://www.datafellows.com/cih/#detect

Not likely, but it caused the same problem for me once.

Why do you have the Himem and Emm386 loading for? You shouldn't be using that.

Are you using NetBIOS protocal?

Disable those lines in config.sys and see it stops rebooting.

Hi B.E.

I was wondering about that too along with a few other things. But seeing they didn't feel they needed to answer my questions, why bother? It always amazes me people want the free help but don't want to answer your questions if they think it's not related to their situation. It's like pulling teeth, if you know what I mean. But hey, that's the net.

Nathan,
I thought i did answer your questions. Sorry if i missed something.

BE,
I disabled the config.sys, and i'm not using NetBios. I have TCP/IP and IPX/SPX enabled.

So far today there haven't been any problems.
I made sure all my drivers where updated, they already were. One thing i changed was my CDR-W. It was set for AUTO in my BIOS, i changed it to none, and so far everything seems OK. I really appreciate all the help. I'll keep you guys posted.

Thanks again to all,

Rick

Boot to safe mode. Go into device manager and look for duplicate entries. If you find any, delete them both or all and reboot. Also look for devices that are no longer installed on your system but still listed there. Delete them too. Then reboot.

Nathan,

I did find 2 identical lines for my Sounder Blaster Live. I have a Secondary IDE controller (dual fifo), would this effect my CDR-W? Do I need two Communications Ports COM1 & COM2? I don't use a phone modem. I haven't crashed at all today! Thanks a bunch!

Try deleteing both those SB lines, reboot, and see what happens. If it reinstalls both of them, then they belong there. If not, then it may help.

If you need another IRQ to be free, then disable on of those ports to free it up.

I doubt the FIFO's are the problem, but you never know. The bus mastering drivers affected the HP 5 GB backups from working on PII.

After this point, if it's working, don't fix it anymore.

hey rick try this....in controll panel goto display properties...settings...click on advanced button...under general there is a section marked compatibility see if the restart automatically after color changes is selected...if so change it to ask me before applying....
that messed me up with one of the games i have...caused the computer to restart when the game tried to change my color settings
i don't know if that will help but you could try it.........
