Does anyone know if you can just d/l parts of the update that you want? I'm not going to turn on autoupdate because I'm not really in need of the security updates like their firewall or pop-up blocker; but I would be interested in improved wireless support etc.

you cannot get only certain sections of the service pack. it's an all or nothing deal.

I guess I'll be passing on that one; don't see anything interesting enough so far.

Hi,

I have had SP-RC2 installed on 3 PC's and 2 latops for 2+ months and have had no problems with any of them.. It did re-arange the icons on my laptop but that didn't take long to correct. It is running with both firewalls, win and zonealarm quite well so far.

The RC2 run has been reported as the same at the final release, and if so, I am already setup.

gl and cheers mac :p :p

pmckinnie This thing works to keep the desktop icons in place.

I, too, am using SP2 RC2. It works. If you don't set a restore point and dump the uninstall files, the thing isn't very huge. It's liveable and worth it. I have an image backup.

On-line distribution will be the primary distribution vehicle for Windows XPService Pack 2 and below is a summary of the key milestones of the distribution plan:

08/06/04 Release to manufacturing

08/09/04 Release to Microsoft Download Center (network installation package)

08/09/04 Release to MSDN subscription site (CD ISO image)

08/10/04 Release to Automatic Updates (for machines running pre-release versions of Windows XP Service Pack 2 only)

08/16/04 Release to Automatic Updates (for machines NOT running pre-releases versions of Windows XP Service Pack 2)

08/16/04 Release to Software Update Services

"Because of the significant security improvements outlined above, Microsoft views Windows XP Service Pack 2 as an essential security update and is therefore distributing it as a "critical update" via Windows Update (WU) and the Automatic Updates (AU) delivery mechanism in Windows. Microsoft is strongly urging customers with Windows XP and Windows XP Service Pack 1-based systems to upgrade to Windows XP Service Pack 2 as soon as possible."

Cheers

There are a few mirror sites claiming to have the RTU version for downloading. The sites are crowded. It'll take the better part of six hours to download. But after all that trouble, how can we be sure that the file is genuine? Personally, I'll wait a few more days. Until then, I'll just run my beta version. When the known real deal is available, I have a very tested, virus free SP1 waiting to be ghosted back.

i downloaded the final. picked it up off bit torrent.

(if i say anything here thats not allowed edit my post i dont want to get into poop for something)

i picked up the link off www.hardforum.com in this section http://www.hardforum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=16

i dont remember the thread it was from but its in there. my SP2 doesnt have a build and the MD or whatever matches... so i'm 99% sure its the fianl. i havent seen anything that makes me think diffrent.

so far its fine. i turned off the "firewall" i have a hardware firewall and never had a problem with that... and it gives me hell for not having auto updates on, and no virus scaner(i used trendco often instead of a active scaner) the pop up blocker is nice. i havent had any programs do antyhing weird. its just like sp1 to me, but it does seem a bit quicker. althought for me it was already fast.

one thing that REALLY pisses me off, is my MSN doesnt have the "check e-mail" link. i have to go to open my browser and go threw that way. so thats a bit irritating.. and i dont know why they would remove that feature. i dont use MSN 6.0 so i dont know if its the same for that, but the built in MSN doesnt have that feature.... so i'm dissapointed there.

Is this by any chance the full SP2? I need slipstream this ASAP: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=049C9DBE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en

as far as i know its the full version. i'm unsure what slipstreaming is sorry i cant help you there.

one of the ways i read you can find out if its the final if you go to control pannel>>system and if it says Service Pack 2 build 'something' its NOT the fianl. mine does NOT have a build number so that supose to be the final version.

theres also a MD number you can check, i dont recall how but that forum had all the info i needed to give it a try, hehe

the Windows update site changes to when you get sp2. it looks a bit diffrent. and has a few new things.

I'm not going to download my security update from Bit Torrent. Try Microsoft. It might be more reliable.

Check for another thread on SP2. It has the MS link.

'sfunny, I was all over MS update (v5) earlier today and nothing - when I check back after seeing this thread, they wanna offer me the download!

Too late for the itty bitty update, they can "... Shovel it" Sandra Bullock - Demolition ManI want it all! 266.1MB. one format & reinstall coming up this weekend! :r

I just slipstreamed the full 266MB sp2 onto an sp1 CD, It grew by only 90MB from 535 to 624MB.

The Slipstreamer I used must have removed any duplicate files - very clever!!

Now to see if I can do a repair install before the big wipe this weekend. I'm going in ...wish me luck!

I've managed ot knock up two different ISO's, one of 700MB, the other of 590MB. Crazy.

The problem i have is ive got to use slightly "askew" methods of doing the slipsteam as i cant for the life of me (for some bizzare reason) manage to extract the bootable file from the XP-CD, as such i end up ripping an ISO of the original CD and copying thel content off of the CD to the HDD.

I then perform the slipsteam onto the disc content, before re-inserting that content back into the ISO, overwriting any old files merrily as i go. I'm certain it doest do the job "properly", but it does do the job

I'm Alive!!! Just need to test a few things before I holler too much.

Use the simple method Jakk - Cheat. :D

AutoStreamer (http://mhtools.knoware.nl/raptor/autostreamer/AutoStreamer.zip) is the way to go. :t

Mine loads ok, but when i check for updates (I don't have auto-install enabled) I get an "admin error" message on the update screen.

Think I'm gonna try auto mode and see what happens.

Has anybody tried a clean install yet?

I'm glad to see that AutoStreamer is living up to it's name ...on the wish list is the ability to include 3rd party drivers. ;)

AutoUpdate isn't working either. :([Error number: 0x8007043B]
Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested page. You may find the following resources helpful in resolving the problem: I think my issue may have something to do with the fact that I was offered the download and had the "Update Available" icon in the taskbar when I updated manually - the site is now acting out of jealousy. :p

This doesn't bother me greatly because as I said earlier, I will be doing a clean install this weekend - If I can stay sober enough - it is the BBQ & party season afterall. :D

oh boy, i went ahead with the new install of XP pro after slipstreaming it with SP2.

Working well after i activated over internet.....the only thing i don't like it now stops showing pictures in OE.

Also i keep getting these balloon tips saying no antivirus when i have Nav 2k3 OEM sitting around. I disabled the Antivirus thingy( in the security center) since it can't detect it. But still the balloon tips keep on coming at logon.

Firewall is pretty good, Shields Up! security check results came out to be "Stealth".

I noticed Boot.ini has a different switch:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

so what is noexecute?..seems like the new mem protection thingy or sorts.

Anyways no problems with apps as such....i will start installing spybot, adaware and other general apps now....:t

cool....Strawbs what theme are u using there?

I did patch uxtheme with 2180 release from softpedia.....i am on a search mode for themes.:)

Strawbs
08-11-2004, 02:28 PM

it's one of the standard XP pro themes - Blue (default), Silver or Olive Green (yuk)!

did you slipstream manually or inject the uxtheme file first and then slipstream auto?

Sun
08-11-2004, 02:45 PM
dang, that theme was already there.:p

I slipstreamed only SP2.

After that installed XP >activated>rebooted>then booted into 98 and copied the patched uxtheme.dll to windows\system32.

http://www.softpedia.com/public/cat/9/3/9-3-14.shtml

I dunno how one fixes that corrupt file prompt that you get during windows install. you know when u replace the original uxtheme.dl_ with the patched one. The setup process i think somehow checks the file size or digital signature.

Dunno how to fix that.

Amazing, this file is so small, it will only take a couple hours on my wimpy dial up connection.

So why are you downloading the network install for IT professionals when you could only be downloading what you need on windows update, not the whole shebang you say? well, I cringe to think what MS is looking up in my computer when I install over the internet. I'd rather download the whole thing and install while disconnected.

I like this new feature in the Internet Options Control Panel.

"Manage Add-Ons"

This should help in the fight against spyware a little as you can shut off the controls.
